Another YouTube video for my students

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody.

As the title says, I've recorded a new video and just uploaded to YouTube as a support material for my students. I hope that those interested on learning that tune will find it useful. Please read the video notes. As I said there, I transcribed the bassline in its entirety, so if anybody's interested, just let me know (no tab. Just standard notation).

And it's my Ric's first appearance on YouTube!

hey man, nice job! you've got all those notes down pat (better than me, anyway )! one thing, though... you play very staccato. but maybe you were doing that on purpose for the benefit of your students. i can see how that might be helpful. all those fast notes are certainly very clear! that reminded me quite clearly that i need to work on the speed of my right-hand fingers. all in all, good job! you rock, sir!

and by the way: i want your ric. keep a very close eye on it at all times.

Thanks so much, man! And I also noticed the stacatto playing after checking the recording, but I didn't want to record it again. At many points the notes are much more stacatto than intended. I think that my latin thing has to do with it since the "normal" execution of streams of quarter notes in a tropical song written in cut time is like that: Clearly separated unless a slur or a portato marking indicates the contrary. It's a part of what we call here "sabor" ("taste" or "flavor" - The word that musicians use here when talking about "grooving").

Cool! This is the actual song my bass teacher gave me to learn for this week. So THAT'S how it's supposed to sound!

Was that just your bass straight into the amp? I can't get my Ric to sound like that. Maybe it's the flats.

You bet, man. Flats never (as far as I can tell) sound like that. My Ric has Rotosounds Swing 66, which are very metallic-sounding strings. They are impossible to find here (stores used to carry them many years ago, though) but a friend brought some sets from a trip and I bought one. I normally use La Bella Hard Rockin' Steels.

Maybe it's time for a change... at least temporarily!
