Anthony Jackson & Melvin Davis on Ritenour DVD

Hey, I just got this fantasic DVD of Lee Ritenour called 'Overtime' doing a career retrospective and it has some lovely, lovely bass work from both AJ and Melvin Davis. There's a ton of AJ in action with 'Captain Fingers' being particularly excellent - and Melvin is on his 7 string Ken Smith for a couple of tunes at the end (as well as slapping up a storm on an earlier funk tune) - but his solo on the last but one tune is really good - the guy's got some serious chops - anyway I haven't come across many new DVDs with footage as good as this (apart from the Drummers Collective thing from Hudson) - so if you want 2 and a half hours of funky jazzy stuff full of tasty bass playing this is well worth checking out:

I wouldn't spam this unless I thought it was really good - but it really is quality stuff - I'm sure some of you have it, if you don't, then grab it

Cheers

Mike

Yeah, I would definitely suggest this DVD and/or album. It has incredible musicianship all around and the bass chair is held down by some pretty groovy cats!

As mentioned, AJ and Melvin are on there but Dave Carpenter fills in the acoustic role and does it to perfection.

As Mike said, pick it up!!

Another vote for this great DVD, which I think Bernie put me on to some months ago.

Hey Mike, I don't know where you got yours but I usually get mine from this cool US site where they specialise in Jazz/Fusion CD/DVDs. Not only are they usually much cheaper but you can pick up these things sooner than waiting for someone over here to get them. Let me know if you want the link (I don't want to be caught up in the "spamming" rules) and make sure you have an empty credit card when you go to it !!

Cheers

Hey Nick - well if you didn't know altready I am the DVD reviewer for Jazzwise magazine - so I got mine free, hjammy bugger that I am, but I thought you AJ fans would be onto this already - it's great stuff.

One thing I did love about AJ's sound was when I was watching it on my PC - I have two massive speakers either side of my desk - I was getting the full effect of his Fodera's B string on some tunes - he just lets it ring out on a low C and the thing just *throbs* - really, really impressive.

His playing is amazing on this - but if I have one very small criticism of his technique is that he sometimes plays notes that sound a bit scratchy, or that seem weirdly plucked / fingured or something - it's hard to descibe. Apart from that his basslines and improvised ideas are just fabulous - what do you reckon to Melvin's solo on the 7? Very cool lines as well...

Glad you guys were on to this

This DVD is great.
I Know AJ and his playing is so cool.
I have heard Melvin Davis before on Lee Ritenour's Live in LA CD (I think that's the title) He is a great player. AJ has his great own sound but Melvin can sound like Marcus Miller and Rocco. They are some bad players. I really like the DVD!
