Any Hawkwind fans here?

These guys have to be one of the most persistent bands around. I wouldn't describe myself as fanatical about them, but I've always dug some of their stuff ever since I first heard them in the very early 70s when I was just nine years old.

I've recently got hold of some of their stuff from way back and I'm enjoying it all over again, especially the Quark, Strangeness and Charm album and 25 Years On, released when they called themsleves the Hawklords. Some very cool non-Lemmy bass playing on there. Not that I have anything against Lemmy, I've always thought he's one of the greats of rock bass.

While I'm not a huge fan, Hall of the Mountain Grill is an awesome album. I may have to check out some of their other stuff someday.

I always liked the Lemmy era, but never really got into much after- except "Quark, Strangeness And Charm", of course-

Dig the hawk (get it?) on Calvert's arm!

The bass player on this, Adrian Shaw, now plays with The Bevis Frond, who are one of my favorite bands of all time. If you like Hawkwind, check 'em out.

I like what I've heard, but I have yet to procure any full albums.

Hope this thread's not to dead to raise lol

Major Hawkwind fan here. Lemmy of course was the original but major props to Alan Davey for holding the low end in that band for 15 years or something - defininitely the bass player I associate with that band. He gets quite a gnarly tone with his Rick that is perfect for Space Rock

Good thread to raise again, big Hawkwind fan, seen them about 6 or 7 times over the last 15 years or so, and even met Dave Brock once, when we were buying some second hand gear from a classified ad down here in Devon. Turned up to pick up the cabs and effect units, and there was Dave Brock, and all the gear had Hawkwind stamped on it. Very cool, guess what noise the effects units did?
whooooooooosssssssshhhhhhhhhhh........
Sadly sold it on now, so no pics.

I put Hawkwind up there with Daevid Allan's Mother Gong & Amon Duul II, in that they had their moments but really never did anything stellar, but I always listened & bought their material hoping they would have a great LP, but never happened for me.

Still like them though.

kind of hard to pin down as they have a lot, I mean a lot of stuff... breaking it down by decade is probably easiest

70's
Space Ritual (their classic double live album w/ lemmy)
Hall of the Mountain Grill

80's
Live Chronicles (another double live album, love Alan Davey's bass on this one)

90's
Electric tepee - they definitely get into a very synth-heavy modern rock sound

those are good ones to start with

Space Ritual is a fantastic record, and some of their studio tracks are classics (Urban Guerilla being a personal favorite), but I don't listen to them very often--a whole album is a little too much for me.

I'm not such a huge fan but they're pretty good. Nik Turner of Hawkwind made an awesome album called Xitintoday, I strongly recommend it.
