I really like their first and second albums, but they started getting a little too polished by this one IMO.

In honor of Movember, I nominate the song "Moustache" by Sparks. Their lyrics are clever even if the songwriting is more straightforward than some of their more adventurous stuff.

I don't know how many people will know these songs, but for those who like(d) Christian music - Steve Taylor:

Steve Taylor is very cool and quirky. I saw him live and what a fun show it was. He has had quite a successful career as a songwriter and producer too.

How about this one by him.

Anyone remember the Rugburns? Not sure why this song is set to a cartoon, but I always thought this was a great tune!

i dee-jayed at a couple of skating rinks in the early 80's and i heard a lot of music that i would like to forget... does that count?
the owner was a high level dance instructor and i heard parts of eddie murphey's dance tune so many times that 30 years later i can still hear it in my sleep! i was a rock only kind of guy back then, with my own disco sucks tee shirt, but i was forced to adapt and skated thousands of laps to the dance music of the late 70's through the 80's.

dmsr by prince, anything except purple rain or raspberry beret
oh shiela dance mix
freddy jackson had a couple of slow tunes

and my wife almost always has one of the rainmaker's cd.s playing in the van

I really like that Spy vs. Spy stuff

I used to play several Jason & The Scorchers songs back in the 80s and they always went over well. A few years ago, Jason Ringenberg was in my town doing a solo performance at a music festival and I met him. He is a very nice guy. The next day at his show, he invited me on stage to sing back up with him on White Lies. The crowd loved it.

Here is another Aussie band for you.

They never really found their niche despite heavy radio play for a couple of songs. I thought they were at their best when they melded XTC and Tears For Fears. I think the record co's thought they had a duran duran or Flock of Seagull on their hands.

Big Country was a great, timeless band that unfortunately, time seems to be forgetting.

Tubes: Lo these many years later. One half of the first album and all of "Remote Control" remain desert island music for me.

Novo Combo - Up Periscope

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PWAt28goAY

The initial lineup was Pete Hewlett, Stephen Dees, Jack Griffith and drummer Michael Shrieve, formerly with Santana.

This band had a few minor hits and should have been much bigger. All the band members were successful touring and recording with other big acts.

That is too cool. Glad to hear whenever musicians turn out to be cool guys and chance meetings turn out to be special like yours did.

I've been a fan since "Lost & Found" came out. The day always seems to brighten when one of their tunes comes on the iPod. I heard someone call it "CowPunkabilly" once.

We're on the Living in Oblivion 80's Greatest Hits CD. Right there with Kim Wilde, Naked Eyes, Bow Wow Wow, Total Colelo and the Stranglers.

When I was working at Record Service in Champaign Il. the Scorchers would come to town to gig at Mabels. Jason would come to the store to restock their EP (pre record deal days) and pick up their profit$ in bib overalls and barefoot.

Early 80's meant Neue Deutsche Welle for me. So, I will throw a few in there.
Fehlfarben - Especially the songs Paul ist Tot and Apokalypse
Ideal - Blaue Augen, Eiszeit, Hundsgemein, Berlin
Nina Hagen Band - Not sure if her first album was 80's or late 70's.
Kate Bush - Most anything from that period.
Toyah Fripp - Lady or the Tiger. A buddy of mine played on that album.

Jason Ringenberg also has another music project called Farmer Jason that is a children's show. I saw him do that show at a music festival and it was pretty cool.
