Any Marillion love here?

Kinda discovered them by accident through AOL Radio and I personally love them.

Any other fans here? Any suggestions as to what I should listen to first?

I discovered Marillion when they opened for Rush at Radio City in '83 (touring behind their first album, Script for a Jester's Tear) and remained a fan until Fish left, though I've been listening to more of their later stuff recently. I'd go for the Fish-era material first, personally. "Clutching at Straws" is my personal favorite, and "Misplaced Childhood" is also worth a listen. "Real to Reel" is a live album featuring songs from the first two albums. Other contributors will doubtless have their own opinions - the band is known for having a very hardcore fan base.

I've been a Marillion fan ever since my old band's drummer introduced me to them. I became an even bigger fan of them when we were playing one of their songs, "Made Again," as a cover and I wanted to get the exact 12 string tone as they had in that song. I emailed them and they answered promptly, giving me a link to the exact 12 string guitar that was used in their recording. Here I was thinking it was some $2000+ Taylor or Martin but it ended up being a $500 Takamine. Sure enough, when I played that song on guitar, since the keyboard played the bass portion on that song, it sounded identical to what I heard on their album "Brave", my favorite album by them BTW. It's a good one as is "Misplaced Childhood."

The first two records are the best IMO also the track 'Grendal' is real great off the first E.P, Rothery is still one of my favorite guitarists check out his solo on 'Chelsea Monday' spine chillin'.

For me the first three albums with Fish is the best.

Script for a Jester's Tear, Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood are great albums. Pete Trewavas is a very underrated bassist IMHO - just listen to the runs on Forgotten Sons on Script'! Great with the pick, back in the day he was a big Aria player, very punchy, these days I think he's playing Jazz's.

They also had at least one very cool *EP out early on, which I owned at one time. When I saw them with Rush the first time, they were met with a combination of utter indifference and outright hostility by the Rush fans. From the first song, I knew they were something special - I was sitting there clapping loudly after each number, while everyone around me turned to stare at me, amazed that I was digging the music. Cretins. I went out during the intermission and bought a Script for a Jester's Tear pin, which my brother now owns. When I next saw them open for Rush, the reception was much better, since "Kayleigh" had gotten radio play.

* The term "EP" refers to an "Extended Play" single from the vinyl era.

I love Marillion. My personal favorite is Clutching at Straws, probably because it was the first one that I bought, followed by Season's End, which is not a bad record either although Fish is definitely missed.

My best friend, in the Army introduced me to them when he gave me a tape of Misplaced Childhood. I wore that tape out.

I was fortunate enough to see them play with Queen, in Manheim Germany.

To me they are like two different bands with Fish and without. If you listen to Fish's solo stuff you can hear a lot of what he brought to the band. Any 'Misplaced'' lovers out there should get hold of "Return to Childhood' which was recorded by Fish and his new band a couple of years ago. It was the first time he'd played the whole piece since the 80s. A great album IMHO!

"Misplaced Childhood" is probably the most known / most liked... anything during the Fish fronted era is worth while start.

I love 'Fugazi' and 'Misplaced Childhood', they remind me of sitting in the back of the family 2CV when I was about 4.

The early Hogarth stuff was good, haven't heard anything they have done in years though.

Ditto on Trewavas' bass playing, Fugazi in particular has a great clanking bass tone going on ( The Aria SB I believe). Check out the track 'Emerald Lies' for a great example.

Misplaced Childhood is one of the best albums I have ever heard. Marillion is pretty awesome.
