here's one I stumbled on a few months back for you metal fans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrgvDR-Gb_M
not exactly a "new" genre, but it takes groove metal to new heights. I mean, who would have expected a death metal vocalist scat singing?

It seems that every 30 years, an entirely novel and new genre emerges out of African-American communities that becomes written-off in its own time but revered in later years.
1860's - Early Gospel
1890's - Ragtime
1920's - Jazz and Blues
1950's - Rock & Roll
1980's - Rap
2010's - ?????
And when I say entirely new, I just mean something that really does have a different sound to it even if its influences are clear, such as the ragtime leading to jazz. Some of the principles of ragtime carried over into jazz, but they are clearly two different types of music.

I went to see Neko Case a little over a year ago, and a band called Y La Bamba from Portland OR opened for them. That was the last time I was dropped-jaw stunned by a band, and they continue to do it to me every time I hear them perform. They have two cds out, "Lupon," and their latest (and more adventurous), "Court The Storm."
What's the genre? Don't know. Psychedelic acoustic trance-folk meets Beach Boys meets Tejano/Conjunto? Something like that. No idea what you'd call it. Just know I am madly infatuated with Luzelena Mendoza. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyUUcTHZcug http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckFQ-7743Rc (if you like this one at all, watch till the very last shot in the video, which I think is absolutely breathtaking) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5-ISF904ac (this rocks... love the bass entrance) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p3ND_hWlcQ
There's also a YLB Tiny Desk Concert at NPR.org that's simply amazing.

I don't like modern metal at all, but this song was great! |

In this period of music, we don't have much new music - we instead have what amounts to
porn videos with really bad soundtracks.

edit: I loled at the person who posted Magrudergrind. He must have not really read the 1st post. If I recall correctly they have been around for about 10 years. And they are pretty straight forward as far as grind goes.
