Well, I've heard Satie's music described as "confectionary" and light and whimsical - although I do quite like "Gnossienes" which is like Gymnopedies but darker!

But the Gymnopedies, according to the composer were inspired by pictures on a Greek Vases and the aim was to capture the peaceful dignity of the classical world...

well, that is what he was asking for - specifics. knowing just composers isn't going to be that helpful.

i was also trying to bring to light some lesser known pieces that may strike a chord with the original poster. going into the classical cd section of a good music store can be staggering for someone who doesn't know what they are looking for, specifically. the sheer volume of the works present in even a mediocre store can make picking something new and different difficult. i tried to keep this in mind when i offered suggestions, instead of just saying "well, stuff from composers z,x,y, w and q are dark in places." - the russian composers you listed have probably a total of many hundreds of works available. without knowing more specifics, like the titles of pieces, it could take a long time to find something useful.
Well - if you go back and read my first post - I did give specific works and titles - I wasn't going to repeat all this in the subsequent discussion and was just taking issue with the specific pieces you mentioned!!

But even there, I was very specfic about reccomending Sibelius' symphonies 3 to 7 over the pieces you mentioned!!

I know there aren't too many, but I live in hope, y'know?

I always like to think that there are no rules that govern what a pop song can & can't do.

However - in comparing classical works like symphonies with pop music, it is perhaps fairer to look at the album as a whole, rather than one song? A pop album has the potential to be a coherant artistic statement in the same way a classical work can.

I say it has the potential to - that doesn't mean the potential is very often fulfilled.

You should check out the version Botch did. Holly balls, that thing is possibly my favorite interpretation of a classical song, ever...

Which was a good cover, but this puts that (as a cover) to shame...

I love that graphic. My favourite bit is the "laser hair-splitting technology"

if you're going to make zinger of an image macro, make it applicable to anybody - otherwise it can be considered a personal attack.
