Anybody heard Corinne Bailey Rae???

I just got her self-titled album on iTunes and it's really good. Her style is R&B without the heavy hip-hop influence that ruins most of what's known as R&B these days. The bass lines are good, solid, thumpin', old school grooves and the vocals are sweet and clean. I was just wondering if anybody else had heard of this girl. If not, get on over to iTunes and grab the whole album. You'll dig it.

I'm actually in love with her and have added her to my stalk schedule!!

I dig her style. Her voice is sorta like an old jazz singer. Almost whisper like! I have her cd. It's good.

I've heard of her, but don't rate her. She seems to blend in with a lot of the other popular slop thse days, sadly!

Um, ok... So, anyway, I just can't quit smiling when I listen to "Call Me When You Get This"! It's like really good disco music. Is that an oxymoron? Not anymore! I love every bassline on the whole cd! It's so ol' school!!! It's like a groove text book! Although, the acoustic version of "Put Your Records On" is a lot better than the album version - even though there's no bass in it. You ought to go and grab it on iTunes.

BTW - Can you tell that I'm really excited? I wasn't sure if it was showing.

OMG I heard "Put Your Records On" over lunch today for the first time and I was blown away. Definitely my new favorite song.

Here's a version that seems to have a fair amount of bass in the mix, although I skeptical that everything is "live". I think maybe just the vocals are live.

Dude, that's the song that made me get the record, but it's not even one of the better songs! If you don't have the whole cd, GET IT NOW!!! Listen to the Bass on "Til It Happens To You", "Like a Star" and "Call Me When You Get This". It's not flashy, just rock solid groove.

She's been fairly popular over here for about half a year or so, personally I can't stand it, its just a bit too sickly sweet for my taste, having said that it was being rammed down our throats by the radio stations here so I am probably bittered by hearing it non stop whilst working.

We don't do many covers but we have been considering doing "Like A Star".

She was on A&E's Breakfast with the Arts, this past Sunday. She sounded great.

Initially I dug what she was doing. After a while though, it started to wear on me. Probably just a little "too" sweet for me. OTOH my wife loves it.

In any event she's very talented, plays bass among other things and no doubt she'll be very successful.

Sweet! Too bad I'll have to watch SNL, though. I'm a early '90s SNL guy. Y'know, Farley, Sandler, Myers, Carvey, Rock, Hartman, Nealon, Spade... I'm just sayin'.

I don't know about stalking but she is a cute little thing. The one video of hers I heard, I liked.

I went and got that pretty girl's CD tonight since Wal-Mart sells it for $9.72 (got a nice Steely Dan greatest hits collection too.) while I was picking up diapers and dish washing liquid. I really like it so far. I can see someone not liking it for being "sweet", but I actually have a soft spot for sweet sounding female singers, especially ones who happen to be solid musicians like Corinne Bailey Rae.

I listened to the entire cd several times the first couple of weeks I had it. Again, initially it was cool, eventually I just wanted to hear her change gears if possible. I like it, I was kind of surprised at how quickly I got tired of it.

Maybe it's just jealousy... she's cute as hell, singing in that cute voice and there's not one damn thing I can do about it . maybe I feel like she's taunting me... maybe that's it. Maybe if I get a ladder, two sticks of butter and a strong rope...

nah, that's DW's gig.

Her debut album went straight to number one in the Uk album chart - so she's already benefitted from being heavily marketed - as she's a very saleable arttist. Personally I think she's really good - a bit like Stevie Wonder-lite - but whhat concerns me is how such young artists are have such high expectations heaped on them by record labels - the media also are always hungry for some 'quality' acts to heap praise on - when in point of fact they aren't that amazing. Bailey Rae is cool but there are other very talented female artists around who are better.

Just my $0.02

True dat, but that's just our culture. Usually, all they have to do is be good looking and be in the right place at the right time and the entertainment industry latches on and puts them on this pedestal of very intense hero worship and the public eats it up. Then, we find out that this hero is a flawed human being and the industry dumps them in the trash, after E, SNL, Comedy Central and all the late night talk shows have humiliated them until it's not remotley funny anymore. Of course, they're not innocent victims either. Most of them buy into the hype and start acting like they're some kind of gods or something. That's why entertainment sucks. Back in the day, if you were talented, you could be butt ugly (Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, almost every other rock band) or fat (Meat Loaf, Aretha, Etta James) and be a huge star for 20, 30, 50 years. I don't know if that's ever going to happen again. Sorry about the rant.

No problem - I completely agree; I freelance for a label here in the UK and I've seen it all as you describe - and despite the internet and the thriving do-it-yourself music culture that's possible now, big record companies still think like they did 10 years ago - they just have smaller budgets and less staff...and cut budgets anywhere they can...

I caught "PUt your records on" on SNL last night. Very good song. The bassist was really groovin and at the end of the verses was hitting some awesome chords. He was playing a 5 string White Fender Jazz through and ashdown 4x10 with ashdown head. She also had a cookin horn section and a drummer with very awesome beats
