Anybody into Rafael Saadiq?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anybody into Rafael Saadiq? He and his band take elements of old style Motown, Stax, and the Philly soul sound and infuse it into new songs with their own style as well. They are also a very classy live act. There is a live concert show of them currently running on PBS TV.

Heck of a player...very Jamerson/Wonder influenced. Another great player in the same vein is Preston Crump...who for a while was his touring bass player.

Love the old school vibe. Not enough cats making R&B records the way they used to.

Great bass player he is!
Check out "staying in love" and learn the bass line.

It'll make you feel soooo goood. Nailing that killer bass line, anyway...

Good old school style player. He loops himself a lot on his records though.

I love this record. In fact, I ordered it vinyl, forgot I did it and ordered another vinyl copy in addition the version I bought on iTunes. Do I know how to support an artist or what?

I don't have the new one yet but dig his first few. He has a great swagger in his feel and some cool ideas.

Yeah. Raphael Saadiq really knows how to groove. I've got all his albums including the ones with Tony! Toni! Tone! and Lucy Pearl. I think he played bass on D'Angelo's Voodoo album too which was on the list of Top albums of the last 20 years in Bass Player Magazine.
Going to see him live in March!

I wish I could groove that forced.

He's extremely talented, and polyvalent. I'd love to see him live in any of projects. In a sea of 'retro' cookie cutter (mostly female, admittedly) singers he is a true talent.

As much as youthful energy and amateur enthusiasm have their place in popular music, showmanship, polish and honed talent have a place in today's music scene outside of the mainstream megastar pop acts. There is a hunger out there for strong songs and vocals, too, whether they are dressed in the clothes of this decade or one the last century.

I like the way he brings this sensibility to his more modern sounding collaborations, too. This was in another thread, blew me away. I'm pretty sure he is playing bass on this track:

Old school rules (spelling included)!

Saadiq has some killer lines on Voodoo. This thread reminded me about "Instant Vintage", the Saadiq solo album that came out before "The Way I See It". Its not as retro as the new album, but has some amazing basslines in almost every track.
