You can't go wrong with Meshell. I played Plantaition Lullabies almost everyday for about four years.

This is a cool video of her at a Berklee workshop:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srCZE...eature=related

Wow!!! I've never seen that clip before! She is smokin', and that Fender is gorgeous too. The thing I don't understand is why she tours with a second bassist since she can play and sing so well when she wants too?

I'm gonna say that I could play a single bass at every gig for 20 years and it would not look half as beaten up as that Fender of hers. Looks like she's been using it as a boat paddle during the day and a bass at night.

Cool, tho.

Me'shell has said that the Bitter material was the first stuff of hers that she felt comfortable playing bass and singing simultaneously on. She's also said that she simply finds it too difficult to play really syncopated lines while singing. Makes sense. The bass lines on Bitter are pretty straightforward rhythmically-speaking. I remember being disappointed the first time I saw her live (I wanted to hear more of HER playing bass!), but at least she still picks up her bass and jams at various moments during her shows. And heck, if David Dyson is backing her up who am I to complain? But yeah, Me'shell is still my number one influence on bass. So funky, so melodic and she plays with such conviction. Musical to the bone!

I can see that, although the Bitter basslines are still pretty sweet. Oh well, everybody cannot play and sing like Larry Graham or Esperanza Spalding!

...or Mark King. Not only does he play some outrageous lines while singing, he also chews gum the whole time! Now that's multitasking.

That's Mike "Funky Ned" Neal on bass - one of Me'shell's mentors when she was coming up on the D.C. go-go scene. I would love to have been at that concert!

I'm totally addicted to this video, too. What a band!
The other one's also available on myspace vids, but this one is better musically. The other is interesting from the viewpoint of her interview answers, especially the "I thought I did" line.

She said in an interview that she bought it that way. It's a relatively recent acquisition, and is older than she is.
