I enjoyed their debut album "Funeral" (haven't listened to "Neon Bible"), and now I've got their new one, Suburbs.
So far, I am really loving it. My favourite ones are, so far, The Suburbs, Modern Man, Rococo and We Used to Wait. But this could change as I listen to it more and more.
Funny thing: although my favourite 'new' bands are The National, Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend, I can't remember from the top of my head any outstanding basslines on their songs. Can you name a few?

I saw him using a capo on his bass, once. Was it in cousins?

I saw them last week at the Osheaga festival (in Montreal) and thought that seeing them live might enlighten me as to why some people love this band. Nope - boring and pretentious.
Thanks - I've wanted to get that off my chest for the last week. |

I finally saw them live when they did a free show in a parking lot near where I live and my friend forced me to come. They were really outstanding; the band was energetic and the sound was great. I'm now a fan, Neon Bible being my favorite of their two studio albums (it's REALLY good) and I can't wait to listen to The Suburbs

He tried to get me into their first album, and I thought it was awful -- pretentious, wussy, you name it. But I've heard Suburbs, and I think it's great. I'll probably buy it.

My friends love them, I just have lost interest. |

Never really listened to them, but I saw them on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart the other night, and I was less than thrilled. My friends have been telling me for ages how great they are, and how they're one of the best bands out there right now, and then I heard them last night and think my friends are absolutely daft. It just didn't catch me, seemed pretty dull. For having a fairly large band, they didn't really seem to be making to big of a sound. Now, my preference is a power trio or power trio+1 format, but I can dig bigger bands, such as the Allman Brothers, or King Crimson, or the Grateful Dead, when they really utilize all the members. But Arcade fire really didn't seem to. The two drummers played the exact same thing all the way through (I may have spaced out for a minute though, so they may have changed it up at some point), when one could have added a bunch of extra percussion instead, the violin didn't seem to play a prominent role, I only noticed it at the last 30 seconds, and the keyboard didn't seem to add too much either. It just seems they could take the band from 7 to maybe 4, with one of the guitars doubling on keys.
HOWEVER, my biggest issue was with the lead singers hair. Holy CRAPES, what happened there? Get attacked by a lawnmower? Egads man, it was the most hideous hair cut I have ever had the displeasure of witnessing.

| | | | I love Arcade Fire, Funeral and Neon Bible are amongst my favorite albums. This new one though I'm not that big a fan of. There are a few songs I like but none that really really get to me. I've only listened through once though so I'm sure some will grow on me after time.

The first is a friend of mine who hadn't heard them before, and I think he'd normally be into them. I didn't see this performance, but I'd guess they had an off night or chose a weak song.
I'm a big fan of Funeral, and though Neon Bible was so-so. Some folks whose taste I trust tell me Suburbs is much closer to the level of Funeral, so I plan to pick it up.
