Okay, I'm 51 and haven't played any Sabbath since I was a teenager. One of the audition tunes I have to learn is War Pigs and I've quickly realized that any kind of note-for-note rendition is going to be a ton of work. Bearing in mind that ther are no shortcuts, can you guys give me any advice on how to approach the song (other than playing it over and over 100 times...which I'm doing anyway... ) I'm making progress but the solo passages are just killin' me...thanks!

One thing i do when Im learning a song is learn the guitar part and see how both the guitar and bass work together on the song.
And unless the band said they want the song note for note, add your own flavor |

Breaking the song down by different parts/passages is definitely helping but eminently tedious...no one said it would be easy! And yes, the band did not indicate that they were expecting a note-for-note, in fact I was told that the song was chosen to test the drummer. Not sure that I totally buy that but I'm just tryin' to put my best foot forward and naturally impress them...at some point though you just have to give em' what you got and let the dust settle from there...

There are many transcriptions you can download. You can loop the passages, slow them down, cut out the bass and play over it, etc.
Good luck.

There's actually a Youtube video of a guy playing along with the song...it's certainly not note-for-note but I think he does a good just of doing what you suggest...staying relatively true to the song without overplaying and consequently stepping on someone else's toes...thanks!
