Awesome Basslines Composed by Non-Bassists

Sign in to disble this ad
The following three immediately come to my mind.

-"I Can't Go for That" by Daryl Hall
-"Miss You" by Billy Preston
-"Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson (it's a copy of "I can't go for that").

Can you add?

How about the synth bass line in Thomas Dolby's Hyperactive? Great fun to play on a real piece of wood.

Stevie Wonder's left hand is one of the best bass players of all time IMO.

Agreed,

Bobby Mcferrin too, all his bass lines are sung like 'dont worry be happy' but they are amazing, must get round to transcribing some!

That also has to be one of the most difficult lines to play. I am pretty sure it is damn near impossible.

You can play that song on bass, but to play it note for note is IMO a very very very very daunting task.

They had a complete transcription in BP mag a few months ago, a very scary chart indeed.

agreed on both counts!

Black Velvet comes to mind, simple but cool - don't know if it was written by a non bass player . . . wasn't played by one though

I haven't actually figured this bassline out yet, just parts of it. I need to sit down and really concentrate on it when I get the time.

+1 He has nice ideas for basslines, lot's of good lines in his tracks, synth and bass guitar.

Stevie W, great stuff.

'Destroy Rock and Roll' by Mylo has some nice funky lines, Howard Jones from the 80's, Ian Brown, Goldfrapp, lot's of them around. Some have a great natural feel for bass.

I'l upload my interp of Hyperactive next week sometime, great line.

Elton John is a master at voicing the bass.

Nelson Riddle too.

The album "Into the Gap" by the Thompson Twins has some very cool key bass lines that sound like ,and translate well to, fretless bass parts.

And yeah, Bach and Beethoven.

I once watched Maureen O'Hara playing a harp and was absolutely mesmerized by the bass lines she was 'throwing down.' Stunning.
