Awesome tune with The Headhunters And Jaco

Sign in to disble this ad
This is an awesome rendition of
"Hang Up Your Hangups" from a live show
With The Headhunters featuring Jaco on bass,
and it is NOT from the show that was released
as a bootleg a few years ago. It is was recorded
on February the 20th, 1977. Even though
the audio-quality can't match that of the
bootleg release, the playing is WAY better
and Jaco stretches out a lot more.
It start with a funky intro by Herbie
and Jaco, before the main theme
commences. After a while they slide
into a wonderful traditional jazz-mood
with lovely piano-playing by Herbie
an a characteristic walking bass-line
from Jaco, before ending the tune with
some high energy lines from Jaco.
If this upload is appreciated, I will
gradually upload the whole show.
Enjoy!!

Whew...

That is a brutally slow download. Hope it will play on my Mac. Thank you for posting!

I can upload it in mp3 if you like,
but as you probably know mp3
is compressed so the audio-quality
won't be quite the same. Are you
willing to take the risk?

As for the download-speed,
I don't think it should take
that long for anyone with
a fairly fast internet-connection.

I have a pretty decent connection.

The file is 132mb. Taking me about 20 minutes. I hope that the performance is longer than 5 minutes??

The sound quality is still not the best but very, very cool.

Thanks!

I'm glad you liked the tune, but
I'm sorry that the sound-quality
is kinda inferior. But the reason
I posted this recording is because
of the awesome playing and
its historical value. What do
you think about Jaco and Herbie's
intro?

And to everyone, this recording
MUST be played on a decent
stereo-system if you want to hear
as much of the nuances as possible.
Either that or you can use headphones.

I upload this rare recording and all you
care about is how I arrange the text in
my posts? It almost makes me want to
disable the upload, but I won't let your
remark ruin it for everyone else.

Good day!

I really enjoyed the clip. Jaco certainly sounded nothing like Paul Jackson! The 16th note groove that he established was blistering, and admire his stamina. Jaco os fascinating for the way he recycles riffs and ideas, I heard many of those licks are more famous tunes from his own book. I really like the "straightahead section where he walked. His walking seemed to bring Herbie Hancock alive.

Initially it was a bit weak but as their communication strengthened it quickly went to awesome! (I think more of the bass groove than the weedly deedly stuff on the keys (or is that a horn or guitar?) ...but it has it's moments too.)

I actually preferred the stuff that started around 9 min.

I'm glad you liked it,
it means a lot to get
at least some corroboration
that my efforts are
appreciated. Instead
of slamming things
that are trivialities( like the
person posting earlier in this
thread did) and that have
absolutely nothing to do
with the actual upload,
you showed some common
courtesy. That guy had some
nerve writing what he did!

I could have been
selfish and kept these recordings
to myself, but instead I've been
gracious enough to spend
hundreds of hours of my valuable
time that I easily could have spent
on other activities.
There is a function on my site
that allows me to see the amount
of downloaders and in proportion
to the downloads not many
have chimed in to say thanks.

Does anyone know if Jaco ever played or recorded "Round Midnight" with anyone?

Jaco played a ridiculous amount of jazz standards
throughout his career( especially when he was
getting into jazz seriously in his 1972-1975 period
and almost playing within that genre exclusively),
so I would say that there is a high probability
that he did play it, at least on occasion. But he
never recorded it for a release, and I don't know
if there exists any recordings of him playing it
live.

Here's a tune from the same show, called
"Gentle Thoughts". It features some very laidback playing from the whole band, before Jaco starts to solo near the end of the song. The first half of the solo is made up entirely of some very melodic false harmonics
before Jaco starts playing some of his most famous fast licks. Again, the sound-quality is not very good but the playing is stellar.
