Awsome (in the true sense of the word) albums

hope this is the right forum...

I would like some suggestions for albums and groups or songs I should check out that have REALLY REALLY REALLY great musical landscapes in their albums or certain songs.

for example longer Pink floyd songs, or Yes songs, or maybe some peter gabriel. Live throwing copper, led zeppelin, rush.

LUSH, COOL, "wow, how'd they make that cool song" type recordings. they make you shake your head or smile with their complexity and musicality.

basically AWESOME music!? thanks

I think Porcupine Tree is a band you'd really dig, based on your descriptions - a lot of their songs are very atmospheric and "lush" as you said. I'd recommend songs like "Arriving Somewhere but not here," "Dark Matter," "Deadwing" and if you want something really trippy, their album Voyage 34 is basically music put to an acid trip. Really good stuff for mellowing out to, and they have some heavier material too. It's not really complex, but more than most music being made now I guess. Just really well written atmospheric music.

And since you mentioned Led Zeppelin, I really get that vibe you described from "Achilles Last Stand", which makes my jaw drop every time I hear it! The arrangement is absolutely nuts, and I'm still amazed they could pull it off as well as they did.

You have to check out Gordian Knot. All instrumental, and all amazing. It's basically fretless bassist/Chapman Stick player/keyboardist/guitarist Sean Malone, and whoever he hires to work with him. Some musicians he works with include Bill Bruford of Yes and King Crimson, and Sean Reinert & Paul Masvidal of Cynic.

They mix proggresive rock, jazz, metal, and classical.

They have two albums, Gordian Knot and Emergent. Go get them now!!!

just to clarify I don't want freakout music or something to get stoned to, but musically and tonally engaging with or without lyrics. not caotic or grateful deadish, however I have liked some MOE warts and all III. a bit rambling, but easy to listen too with some interesting technical pizazzze sp?

Then it's settled. You must listen to Gordian Knot, it fits your description nearly perfectly.

BG thanks for the gordian knot suggestion, sounds interesting. I heard some clips and I realized it reminded me of Tangerine Dream.

More suggestions...

I highly recommend A Sun That Never Sets By Neurosis .

The album is spectacular and the dvd is even better. The dvd is the album with visual artwork along to the music. quite a sonic experience.

Well Hemispheres by Rush should fit the bill but you obviously know about that one.

Watchtower- Control and Resistance... Essential tech metal

Coroner- Any album from No More Colour onwards but particularly Grin.

Isis "Panopticon"......... holy crap! great sonic scapes ina heavy music sense of the term. there are some "screamo" vocals, BUT, only about 45sec. worth in songs that are 7+ min. long!!!!

also check out "Oceanic" by Isis...great stuff.

Devin Townsend's stuff is all prety remarkable, but I suggest Ocean Machine. Jaw-dropping stuff indeed, like entering an endless cathedral of sonic euphoria, to put it mildly.

Staggering, incredible genius.

You could try some:

Dredg (Leitmotif or El Cielo)
Jeff Buckley (Grace)
Oceansize (Effloresce or Everyone into Position)
The Cure (Disintergration)
Explosions in the Sky (Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place)
Tortoise (TNT)
Godspeed You Black Emperor (Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven!)

Good luck!
