Bands/Bassists with weird bass lines?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can you think of any bassists that have really weird and different (but suiting) bass lines?

Walter Becker from Steely Dan totally does this. Bodhisattva and Reelin' In The Years, the versions on Alive In America have completely different bass lines then they do in the studio. Very very cool though! Same thing with Peg, thats an odd bass line too!

Can anyone think of any other examples?

Steely Dan is a great example. "Glamour Profession" is another wierd, yet somehow fitting bassline.

I think Jaco Pastorius with Weather Report has a LOT of weird (albeit cool) basslines that fit but seem like they shouldn't.

Colin Moulding from XTC.

"Oranges and Lemons" has some great quirky basslines...

Bruce Thomas with Elvis Costello and Graham Maby with Joe Jackson - Very interesting/atypical approach to basslines and VERY cool, indeed. And I feel a bit like a broken record here, but Tracy Wormworth's playing in general, but with the Waitresses in particular, is very cool and not on the beaten path.

Also, big +1 on the Colin Moulding.

Mike Gordon from Phish... incredibly weird basslines but one of the most tasteful slappers I've encountered...
