Bands First Full Length album

I play bass in Vessel (www.vesselnh.com) we're a post rock band from New Hampshire.

We recorded our album at Thundering Sky Studios in South Berwick Maine. (www.thunderingsky.com)

We were super happy with the final product. I was surprised to have my bass so present in the mix. usually something i dont hear so present when playing live or in other settings.. but we are super happy to have this cd done.

let me know what you guys think.

here is the entire album on youtube

got word today that our album will be carried in the bullmoose music stores :P we have a batch in another local store too.. its nice when things start coming together.

we hope at some point that our talents get recognized and we get the opportunity to do some movie scoring... thats one of our goals. Its super fun writing conceptually and its definitely something we would like to do often outside of our own albums

I live in Berwick. I've sent an e-mail to Thundersky inquiring about getting our stuff mixed. What did you think of that studio?

The album I'm currently working on and almost finished with is a concept album as well. I've only heard the one song of yours (the video on Thundersky's page) but now that you've got the rest listed here I will have to give it all a listen.

It's a small world. Good luck and maybe I'll run across ya'll some day!

thundering sky gets my 150% recommendation.

everyone else in the band would do the same. Chris Magruder hands down is the best in the area.

he has a crazy attention to detail and 20+ years in the biz worth every penny.

on a personal level he's just an awesome guy too. very mild mannered and awesome to hang with .. made things even easier.

he has a billion tricks up his sleeve too.. probably learned and forgotten more things than most people know.

Well, the choice is between Thundersky and Tunetown. I might have been influenced towards Thundersky a little now

Keep rocking, weird running across you here as I just found out about your band like 2 days ago. Hell of a coincidence.

also if you end up at thundering sky tell him vessel sent you :P

another awesome thing about thundering sky is he has a ton of vintage cabs, amps and gear there that you can use when you record there. we were able to use a really nice early marshall cab for stephens guitar work.

All the stuff listed with Chloe and Stephen Dawes. It's me on bass on all the other stuff too though. And even Stephen on a lot of it.

Unfortunately, they both live in England so actually playing together or gigging is not gonna happen. But we've learned a lot on our own about mixing for sure.

I want to have some mixed at Thundersky to see how big of a difference it would be mixing like we currently are or going to a professional studio.

sounds great. definitely a good master would help things. it was amazing to hear the process in the studio.. being able to hear each instrument more clearly as he was working on it. i cant wait to get back in to the studio.

My main concern is how long it takes. It took us a long time to mix what you currently hear up there and at $55/hour, that would add up quick.

I've been thinking of maybe mixing one song at a time. All the recording is done, so we would just need his mixing skills.

Does he work with you, trying to mix the sound your going for with you there to answer questions/make suggestions, etc or does he just take the tracks and get back to you when they're done?

I've never done any of this professionally so you can imagine I'm going to have a lot of questions for him. Is he patient?

You can do either way. We had 100percent trust in his abilities after hearing the rough mixes. So we told him to do his magic and we will let himknow if we needed changes. There were a couple tiny tweaks we had him do.. but he has an awesome ear. We ended up paying for recording and bartering for mixing... he loves vintage gear, and such. One band does hardscape and bartered studio time for a walkway.. lol.. he's flexible on that end of things.. if you can be lucky to have gear or a skill to barter..
