Bands that just plain ROCK!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been listing to primarily extremely technical progressive music lately. The type of stuff thats mind blowing to a musician, but normal people don't really dig. While that stuff is amazing, I've forgotten about the simpler art of rocking.

I'm looking for bands that just plain rock. I tend to dig the heavier rock/metal bands, but can get down to other stuff like stoner rock, alternative, punk, hardcore, etc. I also prefer more underground bands, but enjoy anything as long as they groove and hold my interest.

Some of my favorites are: Clutch, possibly the greatest modern rock band out these days...I Love 'em, they just keep getting better. Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Kyuss, QOTSA, The Sword, Dozer, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Sabbath, The Melvins and many more.

What bands do you guys think just plain rock?

You probably are already familiar with Fu Manchu, which is what first came to mind.

But there's a band you might dig that you may not have heard of called Teeth of the Hydra. Super rockin' amalgam of stoner metal and thrash, out of Columbus, getting bigger all the time.

Pick up "Feast on Scraps", a DVD by Alanis Morissette. That's as good as modern rock gets.

Oh Rock n' Roll, where to start?

For Garage rock:The Dirtbombs, The Mummies, The Sonics, Rocket from the Tombs (Rocket from the Crypt isn't too shabby either), Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Guitar Wolf, The Stooges, Sam Sham & the Pharohs, The Pretty Things, Radio Birdman, Thee Headcoats & Headcoatees (I'm sure Billy Childish's other bands are just as good, but I haven't heard most of them.)

For metal/hardcore/stoner: Phobia, Dropdead, Lack of Interest, Deep Wound, Siege, Federation X, Goatwhore, Infest, Poison Idea, Unsane, An Albatross (they can get tiring to listen to, but I'm amazed they can still put on the live show they do.), His Hero is Gone, I Object, Coliseum, Black Cross, Artimus Pyle, Backstabbers Inc., Bane, 9 Shocks Terror, Comets on Fire

Punk/Indie stuff: The Constantines, Drive-by Truckers, Fleshies, F.Y.P., Lightning Bolt, Tiny Hawks, American Steel, Deerhoof, Dillinger Four, The Exploding Hearts, The Germs, The Jam, Japanther, Kid Dynamite, Lifter Puller, Mclusky, Subhumans, Television, & Richard Hell

So much good music.

Black Crowes does one of the best live shows I've seen.

Stone Temple Pilots is some good grunge rock.
Then there is, hmm... Foo Fighters, Shinedown, Disturbed, Mudvayne, Tool.
But Motown and Soul is really getting me lately.

Early Blue Oyster Cult was pretty heavy for the time, and still holds up pretty well. If you get the DVD A Long Day's Night, Buck Dharma hasn't lost a step.

I love Clutch & sHeavy. sHeavy is such an underrated band. It's sad.

I've been hooked on Psychostick latley. Goofy crazy type stuff that I'm really digging. Bass player has a really cool tone as well. Really good dics!

Good suggestion on Fu Manchu, I've never really listened to them that much. I just bought "California Crossing" on iTunes, the clips sounded pretty rockin.

Dude! Awesome, awesome recommendation on sHeavy...These guys seriously rock, very Sabbathy. I went with "Celestial Hi-Fi" for starters, I'll definitely be getting the rest of their albums.
Edit: I just bought "Republic?" too after going to their myspace page and hearing the song spy vs. spy...So sick!

Pentagram is great too. I already have all of their stuff. Never heard of the BelRays, what do they sound like?

Wow, thanks man, I don't even know where to start with this post.
I'm into a few of the bands you listed but there are a ton on here I've never heard. Looks like I got some listening to do!

Rye Coalition. Their latest album was produced by Dave Grohl.

Think modernized AC/DC, but from New Jersey. "Pussyfootin'" is the jam.

Lucky sod. I saw them a couple of years ago; was good but not as legendary as seeing them then would have been.

+10 on the Crowes. Great rocker music.

I have Audioslave on high rotation at the moment - I loved Soundgarden and SoaD and their new stuff takes it up a notch.

one word. SHOWBREAD.

Fantastic band, newest CD is good old rock. Before the genre totally sucked. Their older stuff is much more hardcore/experimental/chaotic/heavy but also flippin' sweet.
Check em out on Purevolume.

There's a local band around my parts that is just that - plain good rock. They're called Chief Beef, and I imagine someday they'll be a lot more than that really good local band we talk about in Phoenix.

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/chiefbeef

And since Myspace doesn't seem to be working with direct links at the moment, here's their soundclick page (free streaming without logging in, just click and listen): http://www.purevolume.com/chiefbeef

My favorite song would be "My Namesakes Are Both Dead".
