Post Baron Browne with Steve Smith & Vital Information

Sign in to disble this ad
Not sure how many of you are familiar with Baron Browne but he's been a staple in Steve Smith's various projects for years now.

I had the pleasure of seeing Steve Smith & Jazz Legacy at the Jazz Kitchen in Indy a couple of years ago and it was a killin' show. Steve Smith, Baron Browne, Walt Weiskopf, Andy Fusco and Mark Soskin were on top of their game, as usual.

Anyways, here's a clip of Vital Information playing a couple tunes.

I use to catch him on a regular basis in the late 1980"s. He was playing with
Tiger's Baku out of Boston. Tiger Okoshi was the band leader, Gerry Atkins on keys
who I beleive was with the Tonight Show Band for a while.
Always a great show.
Thanks for the youtube clip and some good memories.

I used to see Baron with Bruce Bartlett and Abe Laboriel Jr many a tuesdays at Ryles in Cambridge. They let us bring over wings from the S&S across the street and we'd eat and drink pints and watch the trio. Sometimes were were almost the only ones there.

I love his work on all the Steve Smith projects, and he swings his butt off on those Jazz Legacy recordings. Very underrated cat.

Nice! Tom Coster is a great player also. I saw him with Cobham in a small club in Detroit last year, and IMO, he stole the show.... GREAT player.

I agree! Doesn't get as many mentions as he deserves, for sure.

Baron is a killin' bass player! Man, Tommy Coster is looking old! And doesn't it look like Howie Mandel is playing drums!

Late 80s? Wow. I used to catch Tiger's Baku a lot in the late 70s, up til around maybe '82. Saw Baron with them a couple of times towards the end there, so if he was still playing with Tiger by the late 80s he might hold the record for keeping the bass chair the longest!

There's an old Kevin Eubanks album with Baron Browne, Tommy Campbell on drums, and I'm pretty sure it's Gerry Etkins on keys*...that totally smokes. Great stuff, haven't thought of that in a while.

*edit: ...or maybe it's Frank Wilkins on keys?
