Question ?? Bass on 'Josie' from 'Maestros of Cool' album?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hope the link works. It's track 9 on disc 1. I really love this bass sound. Who is the player and a speculation on the bass used?

http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/hnum/9656176

I don't have the album (....of course) but one site listed the bassists as John Pattatuci, Lee Sklar and Gudze(?) but no track/musician listing. It doesn't sound like Pattatuci or Sklar style.

Thanks,
Bill

Well the original was famously, Chuck Rainey - one of the true greats of the bass - maybe it's his style you like!?

Yep...the original was Chuck Rainey and I love his style but this newer Steely Dan Tribute album has a bassist putting a new funky twist to the recording.

That track is on David Garfields "Giving Back".
It could be one of these guys:Jimmy Johnson, Jimmy Earl, Freddie Washington, John Pena, Will Lee.
I don't have a track by track listing.

Also check out Steve Ferrone's version (who also plays on David Garfields track) has pretty much the same line up on it, but with Jimmy Earl on bass.
It doesn't sound like Will Lee, Freddy Washington or Jimmy Johnson to me anyway.
I'm guessing John Pena or Jimmy Earl.

Cool track I agree.

Wow. I sampled the "Josie" track at Amazon.
I did not dig it...at all.

The thumbed bass groove did remind me of Will Lee.

Punchin' In-
Steve Ferrone's version did not float my boat, either.
Too "lounge-y", too "smooth".

Did all this and after listening to Steve Ferrone's version, it's definately Jimmy Earl on bass.

Thanks Mike!!!

I have the actual David Garfield cd that has this cut (studio version). I'm almost sure it's Will Lee. I'll check the credits.

Now there is a 'live' version (Steve Ferrone cd) with an identical slapped bassline that is Jimmy Earl. Hmmmm...

I wouldn't think Jimmy Earl would just 'copy' that bass line for his live performance. Great job Jimmy Earl!!!!

Ok.....what bass was that?

I believe Jimmy is a Jazz bass guy. It sounds like one when he slaps.

DOH! Everyone needs at least one decent Jazz (+ one decent P-bass).

Now, was Rainey's track recorded with a P or his P that had the Jazz pickup added in the bridge position?

I always thought the original was just his P-bass.

Me, too Jerry.
Aja was recorded a year or so after a Rainey feature in Guitar Player mag...in that article, there is a picture & explanantion of Rainey's P-J bass.
IIRC, Rainey was told the bridge pup would add some clarity...he didn't like it & usually kept the volume off.
