Bass on Sly & TFS Small Talk?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone here know what kind of bass Rustee Allen and Sly play on the album "Small Talk" by Sly and The Family Stone?

I'd guess a P with flats but I don't know.

I friggin' love that sound (can't find a decent recording online but check out "Can't Strain My Brain" if you can).

Thanks!

I'm thinking a Jazz Bass with flats.

Jazz huh? Maybe with just the neck pickup? It sounds so woody.

Can anyone confirm this?

Confirm, no. But it does sound more like a jazz to me too, and not just the neck pickup. It sounds like flats with both pickups and string mutes.

Good enough for me! I've been debating Jazz vs. P for my first "big-boy" bass and I think this might seal it for Jazz (I currently have an MIM fretless Jazz with flats).

Thanks!

You got me listening to that album right now. That bass sound really is to die for. You might have a hard time coaxing that sound with modern equipment. Roundwounds and modern amps with lots of mid-scoop will make it sound completely different. Flats are a must for this vibe.

Awesome right? And I love how he uses the whole neck like on "Can't Strain My Brain".

And "Livin' while I'm Livin'" is just ridiculous.
