The "Bass Soundclips Reference Library" thread. Post 'em if ya got 'em!

Sign in to disble this ad
Probably not the first time that this has been tried, but if you've had the trouble I've had recently, trying to track down sound reasonable quality, uncluttered, un-EQ'd bass guitar soundclips, you'll understand why I'm trying to get this thread off the ground .

So, here's the proposal:

What if we use this thread as a place to post soundclips of "natural, un-amplified, un-EQ'd, un-effected (is that a word ) and un-cluttered" bass guitar recordings ?

The idea is to have a basic "reference tone" to "describe" the sound of certain basses (or pickups even) to those of us who aren't sure of how that instrument sounds, or how a particular model of bass, pickup or string can affect the tone (in the case of A/B comparisions).

Ideally, the soundclips should feature either solo bass, bass with a drum part, or even a non-intrusive musical accompaniment. The main thing is that the tone of the bass should be distinct in the mix and not buried under thundering drums, shredding guitars or screaming banshee wailing .

Also, as most of you will know , this little disclaimer nearly always appears wherever soundclips occur on TB: "Sorry for the poor playing" . I really hope that we can just take it as read that all that matters here is how well we can hear the tone of the bass and that we can just leave out any unpleasant opinions about other people's playing (which is not likely to be fairly represented in such basic soundclips anyway ). OK, enough said ...

The other important element of posts in this thread, is that you must supply sufficient details of the instrument in question to allow your fellow TBers to know exactly what it is they're hearing . This should include (but is not limited to) things like; the make and model (and year, if vintage, or if age is significant) of the bass, the construction materials, THE STRING TYPE, any modifications to the instrument, the tone settings on the bass and finally, the technique/style of playing used on the recording (if not immediatlely obvious).

For obvious reasons, it would be better if you could post your own recordings, but if you have (permitted ) access to other peolpe's recordings AND know enough of the details of the recording to give your fellow TBers some idea of exactly what they're listening to, then feel free to post any other soundclips that you feel are relevant.

Finally, if there's enough interest in this thread, it may be "stickied" and become a regular resource for us all (according to a certain source ), so let's give it a shot, shall we ?

.................................................. .................................................. ...

Here's a few "starters" for you . It's basically just a load of major chord arpeggios, played in quarter notes, finger-style on three different basses and recorded direct to the PC's soundcard).

1. Fender Custom Shop 61 P Bass (alder body, r/w 'board, Lindy Fralin p/up, Fender nickel strings. Vol and tone on full).

2. Fender '76 Jazz Bass (ash body, maple 'board, DR Marcus Miller s/s strings. All controls on full).
http://www.zshare.net/audio/12215816d8bf3499/

3. MusicMan StingRay '77 (ash body, maple 'board, DR nickel Sunbeams. Vol and treble on full, bass at 80%).
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1221623585e09f1d/

4. All 3 basses at once !!! Yeah, this is why I recorded such a simple pattern , so that I could mix them all on top of each other at the end . Now you know what a Fender JazzisionRay would have sounded like, had Leo ever made one .

OK, your turn ...........

Skjold Pro-Series 6 String - (ash body, maple neck, maple board, Carvin nickel roundwound strings, passive with Creation Labs Redeemer circuit)

Soundclip

- Tracks 1 and 2 are the drums (an Alesis SR-16 by the way)

- Track 3 (pan right) is a little comp feel track played pretty far up the board. For this track, I used the bridge pickup only with a little bass boost on the preamp. There is also a touch of slapback delay over into the left channel.

- Track 4 (center) is a reggae thing, using both pickups in the blend series mode. (Perhaps I should mention that Pete Skjold, like Sheldon Dingwall, provides a selector knob instead of a pickup blend knob. You can choose neck pickup alone, both pickups in series, both in parallel, or the bridge alone.) The blend series seems to provide a beefier, more robust tone kind of like what I would normally go to the neck pickup alone for, but with a little more mid presence. I used a palm mute technique throughout. The preamp was flat.

- Track 5 (pan left) is chordal. For this track I used the blend parallel pickup setting and the "bright" preamp preset.

- Track 6 (center) is a slap line, which carries what there is of the melody in the song. Again I used the blend parallel setting, this time with the "contour II" preset on the iAmp. The blend parallel setting is really where it's at for slap with this bass. I think the tone is a lot like a 70s jazz bass with this combination of materials and woods. En homage to our other favorite '70s bass slap guy, I added some reverb to the track.

Will, I couldn't access your link .

That's a shame, as I'd love to hear one of these Skjolds - from what I've read, the tone sounds right up my street !

Do you have any alternative .mp3 hosting methods ? Does the link still work for other people ? Can you post me your bass, so that I can hear it for myself ?

Hmm, it works for me. Here is the link as text:

It's just posted to the band's website - let me know if you can get to it that way.

This is a great idea. I'm looking forward to hearing more samples. WJGreer, I've listened to your Fina Dupa tracks before and thought they were solid. The slap tone you're getting from the Skjold is killing. It's the tone I'd love to have in a future bass.

Thank you. I should mention that it is passive and has no preamp.*

While some basses end up sounding like their electronics, Pete and I worked together to make sure this one had an inherent sound based on its materials. I enjoy having only the passive tone control to fiddle with on gigs. And I have never been one to monkey with the blend knob much, so the selector knob is pretty much a "set it and forget it" thing for me.

Come to think of it, I don't fiddle with the volume knob much either. It's either all the way off when I am not playing or all the way on when I am. So really, the passive tone knob is the only one I use with any regularity. Beautiful simplicity.

* It does have a Creation Labs Redeemer circuit in it, which is designed to offset capacitance issues that occur in passive instruments. While the Redeemer has no tone controls and is not a preamp in the sense that most people think of one, perhaps the bass is not passive in the most narrowly defined sense.

Beautiful tone. And it's passive? Until I read your post, I just knew it was active. Great.

Ibanez ATK 750 KA
# Ash body with figured Koa top
# 5-piece maple/walnut neck
# Maple fingerboard with dual dot inlays
# 22 medium frets
# Triple coil ATK pickup (bridge), ATK J pickup (neck)
# 3-band EQ and 5-way lever switch
# ATK4 bridge

Disclaimer - If anyone else can better represent this bass, please do. My feelings will not be hurt.

I have short clips (except for the last one because I got a little carried away) of the ATK 750 at work. My first clip shows off slapping on the bass. RATM excerpt

The next clip is from Charlie by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I speed up a bit during the clip. Charlie excerpt

Here is my poor excuse at improv, but I think it shows off the bass well. The Sound of Mike
