I was just thinking about which basslines raise the hair on my arms every time, and interestingly enough, the simplest ones top the list. To me, it's all about the groove and tone, and not so much about showing off your chops (with all due respect to the Sheehans, Wootens, and Manrings of the world, because I appreciate that as well).
1. Anything by James Jamerson (A P-Bass was all he needed to make history)
2. "Hang 'em High", by Booker T & the MG's - featuring Donald Duck Dunn (See #1)
3. "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi - featuring Alec John Such (A megahit, but the bass was often overlooked, too bad)
4. "Let 'em In" by Wings - featuring Sir Paul McCartney (does a bassline get any simpler, but it's so effective!)
5. "Turn It On Again", by Genesis - featuring Mike Rutherford (see #4)
6. The theme from "Barney Miller" (What bass player HASN'T tried this one?)
7. "For Once in Our Lives" by Paul Carrack - featuring Pino Palladino (groove, motion, and impeccable timing)
...and to my surprise, "Wild Angels" by Martina McBride, and I'm not even kidding! The tone is just sick, landing somewhere in the middle of a Ric, a Jazz, and/or a Stingray.
So, which basslines make YOUR fur stand on end? |

| | | | Port of Entry (Weather Report): Frenetic, virtuosic playing. Some of Jaco's most focussed and accurate playing.
Hysteria (Muse): Fantatsic example of effected bass that simply would not serve the song the same way if it was clean.
Always There (Masters At Work 12" remix 1996): Gene Perez plays his @%$ off through this - some of the most inventive and fluid playing i've heard in a house music context and also the COOLEST "fretless" bass tone I have ever heard on a recording: Dark, buzzy, warm and expressive - and he was playing a Ken Smith fretted five. Listen to it...

Goosebumps everytime . . . . | I'm glad someone mentioned Bruce Thomas. And in quite a different sub-genre, I'm especially glad that someone mentioned Chris Squire. Particularly the Close To The Edge suite, and Siberian Khatru. Simply some of the most sophisticated, visionary neo-classical bass musicianship ever...
In quite a different vein altogether, I'd like to nominate Groovemaster Paul Denman of the Sade band. Particularly... Cherry Pie
