Battle Of The Little Wings

SoundClick artist: The Psychedelic String Orchestra - Electric trio playing Psychedelic Blues-Rock formed by Mark Olson in late 2009.

http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/4/...tleWingGF4.mp3

Mark Olson, a Tber who loves to come on here and talk about how great he is and how great his equipment is and insults anyone who dares have an opinion of their own, challenged me to best his version of Little Wing. So I hooked up and slapped down a version of the intro in about 15 minutes, and posted it along with his to see what everyone thinks.

Yes, I agree it's a stupid idea. But whatever. I'm not afraid to get in the muck!

Saw Mark Olsons thread...

You got my vote out of sympathy, but MAN why would you play that song on BASS?

But who am I to judge you ?

I thought your playing was more interesting. Mark focuses on his tone too much IMO.

For the record, I wouldn't play that song on bass under any other circumstances.

BTW, I don't want any sympathy votes. If you like it, vote for it. If not, vote for Mark's or skip the poll entirely.

When I heard Mark's version I didn't think this song translated well to bass. It just didn't sound right. However Jimmy's version IMO is more melodic and makes that song work with bass

+1 and I thought Jimmy's version captured the mood of the song much better. It's one of the few songs that gives me goosebumps, and I got them on Jimmy's version as well.

There was a thread in amps about someone getting a new Markbass amp, but John Turner went in it and cleaned out all the posts referring to it so you can't find it anymore.

Shame that, since one might really want to read it to understand this one.

I don't see a comparison...I've heard the other player's clips before when someone at sometime was talking about how great a player he was and I didn't see it. And still don't see it.

That's why i didn't vote on the poll, I'm too biased already.
It's cool though that you accepted the challenge

Shaddup Jimmy, you're just a no good bedroom player with an unused pedal board, 200$ Ampeg amps...no need to be ashamed about it.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Jimmy, you are clearly more aware of the chordal content of the tune and you sound like the more accomplished player. I did like the slight swing in Mark's 8th notes though. (Little swing?)

We used to do a full band instrumental version that was a one-drop-roots-dub feel, and actually, that progression is super fun to play bass with (sort of like the verse on Concrete Jungle which follows a melodic line rather than a 3 chord change), because there's so much you can do with it tonally and pull and stretch the song in different directions.

Mark's version I got bored with after about 30 seconds and turned off shortly after... Jimmy's version was too brief and left me wanting more. Tempo wise, I prefer somewhere between the two. I thought Mark's was a little too dirge and lifeless. Jimmy's, although IMO a little speedy, was full of life and I thought really captured the spirit of the song... Well done Jimmy!

On second and third listening, I think Jimmy's tempo is about right, I just want to hear more!

Thanks bro...but that's all there is. I just threw it down quickly this morning and didn't want to spend too much time on it. Maybe one day I'll expand on it, but solo bass isn't really my thing and there are much better at it than me.
