Just kidding - I'm sure these guys have it down. Just not my thing.

Whereas most rock music uses a basic 4/4 beat (however accented or syncopated), math rock frequently uses odd-time meters such as 7/8, 11/8, or 13/8, or features constantly changing meters based on various groupings of 2 and 3. This rhythmic complexity, seen as "mathematical" in character by many listeners and critics, is what gives the genre its name. Musically, math rock derives from other rock genres, including rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, and punk rock. Math rock often sounds familiar but somehow "off."
| 4/4 isn't exactly what I'd call odd meter. Sure, these guys seemed like capable musicians, but ultimately it just sounded like unmusical noodling with random notes over a standard 4/4 beat. I guess it's for some, but not for me.
And must I be required to research every single obscure musical "genre" in order to be allowed to comment on it? |

It seems that way
It's like if Prog was noisier.... I guess. I think it's more a case of someone came up with the term one day and thought they were clever and it stuck. I think it's like prog, but it's hip to like it... so in that respect, it's not at all like prog.
I like these guys, but I agree with Ben, a lot of this stuff is in 4/4. It's experimental for sure, but most of it isn't very "mathy." There are some elements though melodically I suppose, they just don't have a very "Mathy" drummer.
Some of their stuff is a little busy, I know that's the point of math rock, but good math rock can get busy without sounding cluttered. Still, I'm interested and if I got the chance, I'd like to see them live.

I can listen to a lot of math rock but some of it just doesn't sit right. Don Caballero is pretty good, and I love Hella. What are some other math rock bands you'd recommend? |

I was waiting for someone to say that. This is my problem with modern jazz/jazz-fusion. When someone says they don't like it because it doesn't really have a melody or theme or purpose, that it's because they don't "get it". We've got only musicians on this board. Everyone can comment on music.
My Comment: That would have been more interesting if it had some sort of melody. Sounded like 4/4 to me. Even if it wasn't, what's the point in playing extremely weird mathematical things if it ends up sounding like bad 4/4? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
