Is this beautiful or what? (Tears in Heaven)

Well, I've always enjoyed watching this guy's vids as he is a fantastic player. However, I caught this one today, having seen it before but paid it little attention, and I was floored when I really listened to it. The tone, melody, the upbeat-ness of the whole thing, just WOW!

Yep..definitely a poor Jeff Berlin imitation with bad time and bad tone! But I know I can't even get close to that. So I'll just stick to playing walking bass lines and Soul Man!

I had a listen to a version Jeff did on Youtube but I'm sure he must have just been messing around as it wasn't too great. Does anyone know where I can hear a proper recording of jeff's version?

That really is a very poor take on Jeff Berlin's amazing original 'jazz' version - the song is originally by Eric Clapton (about his son that died). The guy in this video is OK but aside from his over-developed Mark King chops - he's not great at other styles - his fretless playing sucks!

Find Jeff Berlin's version of this tune - it'll blow you away.

See, I like that version that Jeff does there, but he seems to lose it a bit with some of his improvisation. I mean, he quite clearly the man as we can tell from watching this video, but his version just doesn't seem to have the same "boom" factor as the other one.

Gotta mention though, Jeff's tone in that clip there is just "oh my word" gorgeous.

I wouldn't normally comment on someone's video presentation but IMO when someone sits down alone and plays to a cam chances are they think they are the dogs bits. Poor imitation of the Berlin take on a beautiful ballad. Very noisy too not well executed IMO. Really not nice

Just wondering................is that dude (first post) in a band or something? He's got a ton of vids up on youtube but I've never seen anything of him in a band context! Is he just a bedroom bassist?

+1 to whoever thought Tears in Heaven sounds weird at that tempo too.

Just found another Jeff Berlin version with a drummer - sounds good:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44s3CqCl_rw

I forgot to mention the first guy's tone as well wasn't happening either, vey 'clanky' - and I think he is very much a bedroom slapper - no idea who he is outside of all his MK 'tribute' stuff.

Why I won't write song with lyrics is so clearly exemplified here.

Imagine if you wrote a song, about the loss of a love, or worse, as it is here; the loss of a child. It may seem cathartic at the time.

Now imagine that it suddenly becomes a hit. Then imagine having to feel the pain, and perform it over and over again every night on tour.

Lastly, imagine slap wankers playing it uptempo, like it's a f@#%ing happy song.

Sickening, sorry. I even find Jeff's version offensive.

I don't think "upbeat-ness" was in the original concept as Eric saw it (sorry Chris, not out to bust you).

I think it was just wrong to do that to that song, but not because of lack of respect for the original or anything like that. More like "dude, you just don't get it do you?"
You have to figure though that no matter what you do, it will give other people ideas that will not mesh with your original intent. You shouldn't let that stop you from sharing your thoughts though!

Berlin's playing is impressive, but that song played like that does not sound good.

faster with more notes != better.
