I can't see the youtube clip here(at work)...so, what I will say is something you probably already know-
It appears Purdie is talking about subdividing the BEAT...in pure Math terms-
1/4 Note = 1 Note = 100% of the Beat or /
1___2___3___4___/
1/8 Note = 2 Notes/each = 50% of the beat or /
1_&_2_&_/3_&_4_&_/
1/16th Note = 4 Notes/each = 25% of the beat or /
1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a/
Dotted 1/4 + 1/16? 2 Notes. The first note = 75% while the second note = 25% or /
1__a2__a3__a4__a/
Played correctly, this will give a Shuffle "feel"; this sort of rhythm, played with a different "feel", can also be used for playing a Samba.
The Beat can also be subdivided into equal amounts of 3rds(each = 33% of the Beat)...a triplet.
/1&a2&a3&a4&a/
Keep in mind that the above can be played "STRAIGHT" or "SWUNG"...the % of 'swing' you add, IMO, adds individuality(although if something is to be played Straight...do it!).
I know...pretty basic.
