Clones of Dr Funkenstein is classic for sure. One Nation Under a Groove is good. If you want to get to the roots of the thang check out the first two Funkadelic records on Westbound Records. They were different personnel (a smaller group) and included a very special guitarist named Eddie Hazel who was taken out of the game early by drugs or so the story goes. Anyway these recordings reveal a lot of what was going on in George Clinton's mind - while he really was not in that band as a performer he was the moving force and producer. Shows what was going on leading into the mega group blow up that was P-Funk. Do note that Funkadelic was less bass centric than P-Funk so some may not enjoy in the same way.
Peace,
S

There is sooo much good funk man, but in summary if you like Parliament you will like George Clinton's "Computer Games" album. Its full of bass heavy grooves, i promise. Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PQJeXCVKT8 |

Aj | Sorry, I thought he died earlier. I have been told that his career was nowhere what it could have been for a number of reasons.
"Cosmic Slop
Hardcore Jollies
Funkentelechy and the Placebo Syndrome"
+1 on the above - among the ones I lost
AFA Maggot Brain goes, IMO that song is a great listen the first few times, then for me it starts to sound like a bunch of overly self involved wanking.

Live pfunk=exsesive! | Yeah isn't it funny how some stuff we really love can still at times become horribly annoying.
Kind of like girlfriends/boyfriends and pets too, I guess.
Peace,
S

He was the drummer for P-Funk around 1975 and from Wikipedia "He co-wrote one of Parliament's biggest hits, Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)." From what I read he had a falling out with George Clinton and formed his own band which sounds a lot like the P-Funk and the lyrics take a lot of shots at George Clinton. That being said it's worth a listen.
YOu can check out one of their tunes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVaQrXcEyR0 |

Jerome would be on stage like 45 mins. before the show started just jamming alone churning those beats from their biggest hits while warming up. Both Jerome and Tiki Fulwood made the "one" addicting.

In this case they have a little differend setup. Dennis Chambers displays some of his best work in drums and "Skeet" Curtis does some brilliant bass stuff. I'm usually all for vinyl, but in this case you wan't the double cd just for one nation under a groove which is missing from the vinyl and IMO is definately the best track on the record. It starts just like business as usual but after some time Dennis and Skeet start really get into it. And then it breaks down to a simple wicked slap bass line with Bernies great keyboards... And later on some really awesome horn section madness. Also the last track, really uptempo version of flashlight is pretty awesome.
There's also some real acid jamming and sometimes it's not funk at all, simply.. what should I say.. Jimi Hendrix meets acid jazz? Or acid jazz meets rock and more acid? Dunno. But I'd recommend this album to anyone whos into this stuff. I think that funkwise this album could've been fitted on one cd, but hey, it costs the same and features some stuff you don't hear on the albums.
Thank god P Funk is coming to Finland this year. I missed them last time and I'm in need of a funk fix. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
