I'd have to say it's Jaco on Joni Mitchell's album "Mingus." When many Jazz "purists" heard that an electric bass player was going to play on a Mingus tribute album, they were pissed, but Jaco's touch and tone is so amazing on that entire album, he won most of them over. This is not a chop recording at all. It's just his tone and musicality that kills. |

I'd already been playing bass for 5 years when I first heard it and owned lots of albums with fretless on them (including lots of Jaco/Weather Report). It's one of the simplest lines he's ever done, but the tone was so pure and un-honky I fell in love with it. Michael Hedges - I Carry Your Heart - YouTube
Franc O'Shea's tone on the song Alkimia (off the album with the same name) is also a favorite. |

I have to throw in Jaco's Donna Lee- Just a killer track and an isolated elevated moment in bassdom!! It was (and still is) jaw dropping in its release. This is an interesting thread with plenty of stuff to listen to!! Thanks!! |

Jeroen had a damn nice sound when he was in Obscura, too.
