Best "hot" bass tone you've heard?

Sign in to disble this ad
What's the most awesome, hottest bass tone you've ever heard?? I have a feeling that most people that answer will be rock players.

Mine would have to be My Generation from Live At Leeds...

I'm sorry to say this, but I like Gene Simmons' tone here:

Geddy Lee on the intro of Cygnus x-1, book I. Rickenbacker+SVT, a combination proven to destroy planets.

AND

Jack Bruce on Crossroads, it's like midrange distortion, I can't even describe nor explain how he does it.

About "Crossroads": I think Jack was playing his Gibson EB3 through Marshall guitar stacks, on "10." Possibly a compromised speaker cone or two involved.

Didn't he play a short scale Gibson? Yea he's is good. I remember that album... It is a mid range sound on that song... You'd think he would have added more bottom to fill it out more ... playing with just 3 pieces... maybe he didn't have the equipment to successfully push more bottom... been awhile back... wonder if he reads this forum.... Hey Jack, can you set us straight? wadup?

I found this online .... by accident... wasn't even looking for it.... Do you think somebody directed me to it? Somebody setting us straight.....eeeeiiiiiiooooooeeeee lol toooo freaky.... lol

During the 1960s, Jack plugged his EB-3 into a stack of Marshall amps (Marshall 4x12s with Marshall 100 heads). His desire for greater volume induced him to crank up the volume control, unwittingly producing the heavy, distorted tone that became so popular in the ensuing years. Later, Jack had instrument technician Dan Armstrong install a diode into the EB-3's wiring to produce the same effect without overdriving his amplifiers.

Today, Jack utilises a Samson wireless unit which frees him to roam the stage. He employs no effects. His amplification consists of a Hartke 7000 head, driving four Hartke XL cabinets: two 4x10s and two 1x15s. Jack sets the graphic EQ on the head to a "frown" which boosts the midrange. He hits the strings hard, producing a punchy, thick, slightly distorted tone.
