Best Kick Drum SOUND

Sign in to disble this ad
What is the best recorded kick drum sound you can think of? One that really defines kick drum.

For example, one I really like is on "Iron Man," off of Black Sabbath's Paranoid album.

I'm not saying it's the ONE; I'm just saying it's a really nice, natural sounding thump.

Let's hear some favorites. I'm trying to define a nice, pounding, organic sound, and you can help!

I'm not a big metal fan really, but Lars Ulrich's kick on Metallica's black album really stood out to me when I first heard it back in the day.

Depends, Some people like the bass drum sound that Metallica has more of that snappy beater sound, some people like that deep deep thud like a RHCP. I'm in the middle I think the snappy is great fro more of a rock music and the thud more for pop/jazz music

As a metal fan, I love chest-thumping bass drum hits and eighties-style gated-reverb snares. Nightwish's version of Gary Moore's "Over the Hills and Far Away" has both: Over the hills and far away - YouTube

But it's Blind Guardian's former drummer Thomen Stauch that probably had my favorite kick drum sound on their live albums. Sadly, I can't seem to find anything on Youtube, but their 2003 "Live" album is incredibly tasty (in addition to being stupidly awesome in every other regard).

Neil Peart - Live version of "La Villa Strangiato" off ESL, right at the start of the break for Alex's solo. Turn up the volume and it is pure kick drum heaven.

Abe Cunningham from Deftones has a great sounding kick drum, especially in songs like Around the Fur.

I've always loved the kick sound on The Cult's Electric album, produced by Rick Rubin. It's huge but tight.

My two favorite drummers have amazing (yet dissimilar) kick sounds/techniques:
JP Gaster (Clutch) - uses Gretcsh/GMS with Evans heads - single pedal
Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) - Sonor w/ Powerstroke 3's - double pedal

Both are killer, but I could groove to JP's drumming all day long...he's also killer live.
