Best Rush album for the casual listener?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to "get into" Rush more.

I've listened to many a Geddy bassed song, but I don't have a very extensive collection of their work by any means.

What's the best album for someone that's not totally familiar with all their work? If it helps, I'd like to avoid some of the more technicality for the sake of technicallity Rush has done over the years, for favor of the more catchy tunes.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

For catchy tunes, I'd vote "Permanent Waves".

2112. By far their best work and IMO their easiest listening cd as well.

Go with The Spirit Of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974-1987. It has all the radio favorites on it and if you decide to delve deeper, you can hit Permanent Waves, Signals, Moving Pictures and 2112.

Probably Moving Pictures, has Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta, and YYZ, probably their 4 best known songs.

But you could also get one or two of the live albums. The newer ones cover a pretty cross section of their stuff, and they really only play the "catchy" tunes live so that makes it a good choice for the casual listener. Different Stages, R30, and Rush in RIO are the newer live discs. Even the older live discs are great choices but obviously their newer tunes aren't on there, Exit Stage Left, A Show of Hands, and All the World's a Stage.

EDIT: Forgot about Chronicles, a compilation album from 1990 so it's missing the last 5 albums (+1EP).

I'd like to put a twist on this: "Snakes and Arrows"

I picked up "Snakes and Arrows" when it was released, after hearing the sample on their site (which I found through TB). My previous exposure to Rush was "Caress of Steel" back when I was 12 or so. I remember liking "Bastille Day", but not getting anything else.

Anyways, I love "Snakes and Arrows", and I've been working my way through the discography since. I think "Snakes and Arrows" is among the top albums, it has very profound lyrics for a rock act, and you don't have to deal with Geddy's squealing.

I'd also say "Moving Pictures" is probably the best known album by the band. It's a great album in the sense that they broke away from the concept thing on this one and wrote some very solid material which was radio friendly which I guess would qualify as catchy. Red Barchetta has always been one of my favorite bass lines from Geddy. It's not overly complicated yet has plenty of movement which really creates a great groove.

Another album which hasn't been mentioned yet, but was certainly a favorite of mine was "Power Windows"

I can only pick one?!?!?!?!?!?

...well, the obvious answers are already here:

Moving Pictures
Permanent Waves (my personal intro to the band and still my favorite for that reason)

A few "not so obvious" ones for me:

A Farewell To Kings
Hemispheres (10 minute instrumental? Hell yeah! )

Being a Rush fan requires commitment. You can't casually listen to them. Get every album and listen from start to finish without stopping. You'll be awake for, like, 24 straight hours, but it's the only way. Total immersion.

Just kidding.

Get Moving Pictures and go from there.

I actually really like Presto for that one. Hold your Fire is good if you like a little more keyboard in your Rush.

But if I were you, I'd go out and get the Rush in Rio DVD. These guys need to be seen live to be believed.

Rush has covered a lot of ground. I think it's more reasonable to suggest three or four albums, so here are mine:

Fly By Night
Moving Pictures
Power Windows
Counterparts
