Isn't 'Killing Me Softly' about a bass player?

"How Do You Sleep?" by John Lennon.

(BTW, I believe "Killing Me Softly" was written about the singer/songwriter Don McLean, not about a bass player. Could be wrong, though.)

Mingus - Joni Mitchell. Maybe not the best, but certainly a great track.

That's the name of the album.
There's no track named "Mingus" by Joni Mitchell.

For serious old school Cab Calloway's Reefer Man comes to mind. It's the bass player who's seriously out there on weed.

I'm gonna second "J.I.M.B.O." by the Rev.

It was the only song they played both nights last weekend in Chicago.

Smithereens, "Behind the Wall of Sleep"

Well she held a bass guitar and she was playin in a band
And she stood just like Bill Wyman, now I am her biggest fan...

There you go, that's two bass players in one song!

Good one! Being a Smithereens fan I can't believe I didn't think of that song.
