| | | BEST Studio Bass Tone

My band is going into a REAL STUDIO (finally!) and I have been trying to keep listening to as many studio albums as possible.
We are a 4 piece rock band, and I'm trying to find great bass tones so I can show the engineer as a reference point.
I really like the bass tone from bands like, Supertramp.
In your opinion, what are some of the BEST STUDIO BASS TONES on albums??
Thanks!

Derek | Speaking of rock recordings, the first examples that come to mind are Queensr˙che's "Operation: Mindcrime" and Rush's "Moving Pictures". You should definitely check them out. |

Paul Jacksons tone on the Herbie Hancock album Secrets is superb. Specially on the tracks, Peoples Music and Sonsho Shima.

Derek | Are you asking what people think are just some good recorded bass tones, or are you looking for recorded bass tones to replicate? If it's the latter, I'm not sure I really understand. Shouldn't you already know what you want your bass, and your band, to sound like?

Anthony Jackson's sound on any of Steve Khan's albums...super clear and pristine. |

Derek | Crisp and Low --- Sweetback has great bass that is well mixed not intended to "cut through the mix"
Not sure if this is your fist entry into a studio... a recording engineer's job is to get clean tracks that can be mixed... your final sound is done in mastering... a good producer can take just about any sound you have and mix it down.
Few bands spend enough on the producer/editor.
Tim

When I was in the studio i would actually change my tones in order to compliment the style of the song and what it calls for ( My band has some soft songs but we also have heavier rock stuff) Sometimes its may not even be a tone you like but if it compliments the song it could still sounds great. Then it should not matter.Play with your settings.
