Hi all,

I play in a metal/hardcore band and occasionally like ot put in a punky bassline (because I like to be different) we play drop A (so on a 5 string bass A E A D G) and I just wanted to know what is the best way to cut through on the mix? As my high notes are usually drowned out ?

Check out some stuff here
www.myspace.com/sintuition

any advice would be great please

turn the low down a tad and turn up your low-mids a bit and your high-mids a lot, and if you want to really get a clanky tone turn up the treble. also play closer to the bridge. either that or tell your guitarists to turn the f*ck down.

Leave your lows flat, boost mids, especially high mids. If you like that punky, bright jangly bass tone, boost the treble a little bit too. Pretty much exactly what SOA said.

Bass usually struggles to be heard in a hardcore metal setting - what you've got is everybody pretty much trying to hog the sonic terrain. If you could get your guitarist to thin out his sound a little (say, below 300 hz) it might help...

good luck with that.

IME, you don't really need a graphic EQ at all. Just boost the mids. If you don't like too much treble, then don't boost it. Unfortunately, that "clanky" sound is probably the best at cutting through distorted guitars.

Best way to cut through the mix:

G&L L1000 Bass
GK Head
Several Eden 112XLT cabs

Not the cheapest, but maybe the best way
