Beyonce Bassist Divinity Roxx - Black Betty Bass Mix

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is a new track from Divinity Roxx - Bassist for Beyonce and former touring mate of Victor Wooten. I had the opportunity to be part of this session so feel free to ask any gear or music related questions. The 'dubstep' drop at the end is all bass guitars through various LFO's and envelope filters. No synths were used in this track.

View track here: Divinity Roxx - BLACK BETTY "The Deep Pockets Mixx" by Eric Racy - YouTube

Equipment used:

Bass - Warwick Custom Shop 5 string (Warwick Basses Amps & Rock'n Roll)

MXR bass envelope filter
Black Box Mic Pre (not the m-audio kind)
and a slew of other outboard effects...

Enjoy!

It's ok, won't find its way on to my mp3 player most likely. That said when I saw her open for Victor Wooten about a decade ago I thought she put on a good solo show.

A long way from Ram Jam, and that's a good thing. Still seems like music for 15 year old white boys, confirmed for me by viewing the live version: DIVINITY ROXX--- BLACK BETTY LIVE @ SSMF2011 - YouTube

I'm just jealous. I wish I had her commercial savvy.

Can say I'm a fan of Mrs. Roxx or the track itself. I would've dug it a whoooooole lot more if it stuck with the electro-house vibe from the beginning.

Spot on... tis our demographic... let's not forget the girls also.

We're hoping to make bands relevant on the billboards again.

This remix track was actually made for DJ's to chop up. We tried covering all bases of club music for that purpose. The goal is to release a garageband version with all the wavs included for people to mix however they want. So maybe there will be an all electro-house version at some point.

The original of this track can be listened to here:

Mind if I ask what's so 'horrible' about it? Sorry if I'm being a pest by being so inquisitive; I love criticism.

I have to agree with that. The switch to the garage/dub style at the very end didn't fit well in my mind either.

After watching the video, here's why I didn't like it:

1) She's not the best singer around and doesn't have the power behind her voice to fake it.

2) Sounds kinda like Rage Against the Machine (who I like) but without the cool factor and overall impact.

3) The tap dancing was random and just didn't work as well as they wanted it to.

4) A big problem with a lot of music fronted by bassists is the fact that you can tell about 4 seconds in that it's fronted by a bassist. The music I love almost always sounds like it came from a person who put equal consideration into every instrument when they were making the song. This track has "Check out the bass!" written all over it.

To me, if you're going to radically alter an established, well known song, you've got to make your changes stand on there own. In this case it did not, for me at least. I'm not trying to be harsh or a knob, it just didn't "work" for me.

Thanks for the feedback. The tap dancer is Baakari Wilder and was a special guest for that particular show only (SSMF 2011). We thought it would be cool to have a battle between him, the drummer, and bassist. I got a lot of feedback after the show of people saying they loved it; I guess the energy doesn't translate well in a youtube vid. As far as the RATM reference goes, I guess that will just come with the territory whenever trying to mix rock/rap. At least you didn't compare us to Limp Bizkit. The 'Black Betty Bass Mixx' was a response to a fan saying they wanted more bass playing in the track, our other stuff is much more guitar/drums driven ex: Divinity Roxx - GET HERE - YouTube
