Big question...first time recording...

Ok me and my band are going in to record in a few days and i ahve a question...

What is mastering and is it nessessary to have done?Itsd gonna cost us 45$ extra per song and we have 5...so itd be alot if its really needed...

Also, give me some input on anything about first time recording do's and dont's plz thanx.
