Bill Black was the first Rock drummer

I was recently listening to "That's Alright Mama" by Elvis, Scotty Moore and Bill Black, and this was arguably the first Rock record recorded. But there was no drummer at the session as far as I know, and the only percussion heard was Black's slap technique. So, could the case be made that he was the first rock drummer? Or at least the first rock percussionist? I thought this might be a fun discussion. Take it away!
