I guess becouse of his flashy stuff a lot of bass players don't take him seriously. His solo's are cool and full of energy but to me when he's laying low and playing in the pocket on any number of Mr. Big songs he's one of the coolest bass players out there. Plus I love his tone. |

Billy is seriously off the charts. Used to see his shows in the early '80s with Talas in upstate NY. We would alter our ID's to get it and watch in disbelief. I still be believe there is no better combination on earth of player and showman. Long live Billy. BTW, he let me play his old fender P one night. It was a pile of crap with way high action. Still made it sound like a million bucks

Not all of them are scalloped but selected few are. I think thats part of his Sig. Yamaha bass. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

His early songs were nothing more than an excuse to have a bass wankfest. And quite frankly, I don't think anything has changed with his songs. I still think they're horrible as songs. However, he does seem to have discovered that every single song he plays doesn't need to be about bass wanking (I think Niacin helped immensely with that), so I will give him credit for getting out of the wanker mentality.

Totally in the pocket 99% of the time. Great solid R&R.

*yawn*
...but hey - he's playing to a packed stadium, and I'm playing to a couple of people in a tiny bar.

I saw him do a clinic and he played some amazing bass, and was a very, very nice and down to earth person. To be that gifted and humble is awe inspiring. I also liked his playing with David Lee Roth and Mr. Big. That solo clip, however, gets pretty boring to me. I wish he was making more a of statement melodically. He is just showing technique and playing very fast. It would have been better if he had kept it under three minutes or even under two. That type of flashy playing can easily get monotonous. That said, I bet live, it was pretty hot.

yea, cheese. Actually, thats not too long. We timed him once when we were kids at a Talas show. 17 mins. LOL. We told him after and he got a real weird look on his face. He felt it was overboard or selfish. In that little club, though, it was amazing. Tapping, etc. Even did part of "portrait of Tracy" did it perfect. Blew our minds

His solos are wanking but he's the best wanker I've heard.Besides wanking, when he's laying down the groove,he is awesome! He fills the space (caused by one guitar) in Mr. Big amazingly! While everyone plays root notes in todays music,he takes solos as riffs. He's the man!!!
And all these are IMO.

I've heard it rumored that both he and EVH claim to have created it. Billy played it in his bass solo when I saw him play. I just thought he was being funny at the time. |
