Well, Bruce...it's live, right? If I want something that's 'perfect/mistake-free'...I'll pull out the recording. Live? I wanna hear guys taking chances & at least make an attempt to go somewhere 'new'....especially in a Jazz-setting.

FWIW, I haven't listened to my Niacin album in years...I do recall the bass tone being terribly thin to the point where I would cite that album as an example of "How Not To Record an Electric Bass".

.
Well - I go to my local Jazz club each week and see live music a few feet in front of my face and I just cannot imagine these guys making any mistakes like that - although they are very creative and react to each other spontaneously!

So there is a drummer called Gene Calderazzo -who moved over from New York and is now a "regular" on the local scene and I swear he is trying to put his fellow band members off with outrageous shifts and unexpected changes - but they always laugh and go with it!
