Black/Death metal w/ Bass that POPS out....

....and slaps you in the face with it's slightly blunt and rusty kichen knife claws?

I've got some of Death's stuff, though I have yet to listen to it

Any songs/bands where the bass stands out even with all the prerequisite guitar/drum noise?

Also, check out any Borknager or Vintersorg with Tyr playing bass. Beyond that, I'm not familiar with Satyricon, but that has Lars Norberg playing bass, might be worth checking out.

I'll second the Steve DiGiorgio remark. Cynic's album Focus also has some great quite uniqe bass playing. Check out Monumension by Enslaved as well.

This album is MANDATORY, and not just because of the wonderfully melodic basslines that stand out. This is one of those metal albums I even think non-metal people should own.

Big +1 to Monumension by Enslaved, I started a thread on that one awhile back, amazing bass tone.

If you like Death, then you should check out Athiest. Very audible bass lines. I'd recommend all of their albums but especially Unquestionable Presence.

I always found it ironic that a band called Atheist has an album called Unquestionable Presence. But yeah +1 on Atheist in general. great audible bass lines.

Some older Fear Factory recordings have audible bass. Live you could always hear it though. The tone Christian got from his Fenders was sweet.

What album is that anyway, is it by the band Ulver or an album named Ulver?

Focus by Cynic. This is quite possibly the best death metal record I have ever heard, and the bass playing is fantastic. IMO, it's up there with albums like Slaughter Of The Soul, Individual Thought Patterns, etc.

Intelligent metal FTW.

Yep. Ulver made 2 black metal albums, 1 folk album in a similar theme, and then got experimental. Real experimental. I love their newer stuff, but I wouldn't even qualify most of it as rock in any way, shape, or form.

Awesome album! Solid from start to finish, with some amazing musicianship. I would put it well above those two albums you mentioned even.

A pretty bad ass Black Metal group

Tulus - Pure Black Energy

It's very stripped down tonally, but awesome bass playing.

Here's what I've been listening to lately.

For Black Metal, I'm really into Goatwhore's new one "A Haunting Curse". Freaking awesome album, great production on this one too.

Also noteworthy is Carpathian Forest. I just got the album "Defending the Throne of Evil". Great stuff. Anyone know any similar BM bands they could recommend?

Spawn of Possession is one of the most impressive Death Metal bands I've heard in awhile. Super-technical original sounding stuff.

And of course...Obituary. Classic death metal. I never get sick of this band, I've been listening to "Slowly We Rot" and "Cause for Death" for years.

Necrophagist
Stabwound particularly stood out to me.
