Blast - Marcus Miller, Live at Paradiso

So I've learned Blast, almost completely by ear. But I'd like to learn the solo in this live performance.

I'm willing to make one up, but I wanted to learn the solo, or at least part of it, from this video. However, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what Marcus is doing in the first 8 bars(ish) of his solo.

I know this video isn't the most convenient for viewing, but the one on YouTube has been removed, so this was all I could find. It's the very first video in the setlist provided and the solo is quite aways in, following the Sax and Harmonica solos.

Don't know if this is the right forum, but anyone who could like suggest an interval or SOMETHING that he's doing, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Sure, I can help you. I think this part is actually much easier than the rest of the solo. The hardest part about this is being able to hit your thumb on it quickly.

So as you probably know, you have to detune your E to a D for this song. When the solo begins, Marcus is playing an open low D, then he goes to F#, G, F#, D#, D and then a C to D hammer-on. He is not just playing the notes, but he is popping the D lightly in between each hit.

Here's a basic tab I made real quick just for the basic idea of the first part.

G------------------------------------------------------------
D----0---0------------0----------0--------------------------
A----------------------------------------------3h5----------
D--0---4---4-4--5-4-4--4-4-4-1-1--1-1-1-0-0---------------

Thanks a lot!! I can't try it yet as I don't have my bass but I will try it and let you know how it works! I've been trying to take this song on my 5-string so I wouldn't have to retune (convenience reasons, obviously) but I originally learned it on my 4-string, so I'll go back to that if it'll help with this.

I knew this part wasn't very hard, I just could not pick out the notes for some reason.

Thanks, though, VERY much appreciated!

No problem. I used to have a 5-string and found it hard to play this, since that low D is played very often.

Have you seen this version?

That's a really cool version! Thanks for posting, I had trouble finding another good quality version after the Paradiso version was removed.

Yup. I'm a huge Marcus fan. Met him twice, he's so cool.

Did you get a chance to try it out yet?
