old or new. I am trying to develop a more soulful style and figured blues might be a good idea to listen to

Tightrope- Stevie Ray Vaughan

Couldn't Stand the Weather- Stevie Ray Vaughan

Scar Tissue- Red Hot Chili Peppers

Smooth- Santana and Rob Thomas

Ex Girlfriend- No Doubt

Santaria- Sublime

the Lemon Song- Led Zeppelin

Something- Beatles

All different, all great bass with lots of feeling. Dunno if that's what you meant by soulful, but these are all well worth a good listen.

It looks like people have the Stevie Ray Vaughn stuff covered. The Essential SRV and Double Trouble isn't a bad place to start though.

And as another TB thread brought up today, don't overlook the Blues Brothers soundtrack. That's some good stuff.

Anything with Tommy Shannon and Double Trouble.

Stevie Ray Vaughn used them and Johnny Winter did too for some time.

They are the best at what they do.
Donald "Duck" Dunn is also a sweet blues bassist

A 'modern' Blues band worth checking out-

Robben Ford & The Blue Line- Robben Ford & The Blue Line &/or A Handful Of Blues.

Derek Trucks' band, too.

Jim, I'm with you, I think Roscoe Beck is by far the standard bearer for blues bass. He is way ahead of most blues players harmonically as is Ford and yet he still maintains a sense of "blues tradition".

I love Tommy Shannon's bass playing on Johnny Winter's Progressive Blues Experiment. Also Jerry Jemmott on B.B. King's Completely Well. Also Duck Dunn on Muddy Waters' Fathers and Sons.

(I'm also a fan of Louis Satterfield's bass playing on Muddy Waters' Electric Mud, but that album is so controversial that I hesitate to mention it.)

Definatly check out Derek Trucks' band stuff. I recently got Soul Serenade and it's awesome. "Born to Rock" is the coolest song, with a great bassline/tone as well.

And Joe Bonamassa is one of my current faves. GREAT bassplaying there. My favorite albums are Blues Deluxe (check out the title track and "You Upset Me Baby" if you get a chance - killer tracks) and A New Day Yesterday (awesome cover of a Jethro Tull song ).

I've also been enjoying some Kenny Wayne Shepherd albums. Especially Ledbetter heights. Some great sounding bass work on there too

BB's got some cool stuff. I really enjoyed the louis jordan
tribute album he did. Jerry Jemmott's really got all his bases
covered on that one;
be it the fast walking lines, the heavy thumping
cabaret style lines, or the mexican 'pattern playing'
on "Early In The Morning". Great music, fantastic playing!

I also really enjoy Jeff Ganz's basswork with Johnny Winter.
"Hey Where's Your Brother" and "Serious Business" are both
great. There's a third one I liked, but I can't quite remember
the name... Come to think about it - this breed of blues
typically falls under 'Electric', but it's soulful nonetheless...

I checked a lot of these out. I was referring to blues bass playing that stood out, not complete background stuff.

I suggest john mayer trio's bassplayer. he has REAL SOUL in his playing, not the stuff some of you recommended. "John mayer - don't need no doctor" is GREAT bassplaying. please check it out. it is awesome
