Bob Babbitt playing PJB equipment with Phil Collins

Bob used a PJB 16B and 8T with an M500 head on this video and on the tour he did with Phil Collins. Awesome bass playing...just plain old school Fender P bass thumpin' that can't be beat. Some of the original Funk Brothers are on this video with Bob.

Yea... But.... Babbitt's got a WHITE pickguard on the P he's playing in the Collins vid... It just don't sound the same as a tort pickguard.... lol You don't believe me hey? OK.. check this out.... tell me this ain't a better version, but you gotta get past that front end with that guy freaking out.... plus Joan is much easier on the eyes....cutest dimples I've ever seen.

You know what? Maybe it ain't the pickguard at all... maybe it's Babbitt's hairdo.... He got that waterfall thingy going gud with the Funk Bros. and Joanie.... lol

Although I almost can't listen to Phil Collins, I think the music sounded great in that video. The bass drum is mixed much fatter in the SITSM video and I actually don't like that as much -- it gets in the way of what Babbitt is doing.

Noooo!!! It's about the bass that Babbitt's playing in the Collins vid..... when I think of Motown, or Motown songs, I think of a sunburst P bass with a tort pickguard... Jamerson had one, then Babbitt... In the Collins vid he has a white pickguard... white.... white!!!!
That should be like a mortal sin or a sacrilege or something... punishable by 30 days in the electric chair... don't you think? It's like Jaco playing a EB3 or Hendrix playing a Les Paul.... it just ain't right.... ain't nothing sacred no more.... LOL
peace

+1

Just watched it last night and felt the same. I did not know what it was, I thought the bass mix was just too deep, but now that you said that it makes sense.
