I have been trying to learn 'i shot the sheriff' and i just can't figure out that damn song, it feels like the tuning is sooo messed up, is it?

Nah, I usually play it starting on the first fret Bb of the A string and Ive never had any problems playing along to the record.

He recorded a version of the song on the Live in Italy cd and its really good.

That's a great bassline, and it is a little hard to hear, because the tone is so bassy. But keep working on it and you'll be happy when you get it. The only real tough part is the main riff, hearing wise, because it changes the second time through. "Is This Love" and "Get Up Stand Up" are also great to do.
