Booker T's "Time is Tight" - the REAL version

Sign in to disble this ad
As a youngster, I remember listening to this on a soundtrack album my Dad bought of the film "Up Tight". I've loved it for nearly 40 years. The version you normally hear on the radio is cut quite severely (and even has a different main riff).

Anyway, today I managed to find the version that I remember so well and really love. If you're only familiar with the most well-known version of this, you're in for a revelation, especially the intro and the conclusion. Enjoy this one!

Apologies for the hissy intro, it's what it is.

Good groove.

As soon as I heard the guitar riff I recognized it as that Blues Brothers intro, only down a few BPM's.

I only have one Booker T album and that tune is not on it. Although, that last band I was in, the keyboardist was a big Booker T/Hammond organ fan and he may have played it for me. We did a few tunes that the Blues Brothers covered, and IIRC he wanted to do "the real version" too.

Thanks for sharing.

That's the stuff right there, Bill.

Don't know if you're familiar with what the man's been up to lately, but he recorded an (instrumental) album with one of my favorite current bands, the Drive-By Truckers--there's also some lead guitar from Neil Young! They are essentially a Southern rock outfit with punk influences and thoughtful lyrics. And the lead singer's father is bassist David Hood, who was part of the Muscle Shoals rhythm section--that may have greased the wheels here.

The "Blues Brothers intro" is Can't Cut You Loose, and it's more similar to the guitar/bass riff that Booker T used in the more familiar version.

I just love the concluding section on this track that's completely missing from the regular version. It makes it a totally different record, imo.

Greg, thanks for the info, I'm checking it out now.

+1.
I love the chords he plays at the end. The contrast to the opening chords is very interesting.

If anybody wants it, I transcribed the bass line a while back. You can get it off of Dodgy_Ian's web site. Look toward the bottom.

I love the days when bands were human and you could feel the life in the music. The days before digital perfection.
