Okay, so I'm looking to pick up a couple of records from these bands tomorrow morning. Which ones should I be looking out for? I am determined to give Alain Caron a second chance!
Also, for reference, what types of basses does Colin from Porcupine Tree play?
I hope that when I open this thread tomorrow it will be exploding with recommendations! |

I think Colin uses Spectors most of the time.

Moroccan Roll
Unorthodox Behavior
Excellent fretless playing by Percy. This is his pre-Wal days so it sounds really slippy and glassy while the later stuff sounds more full and thick. |

If you can only buy one I would recommend Unorthodoxed Behavior which is an early 80's release.
If you want to hear the early stuff live then the album Live Stock captures the essence of the band.
To see how guitarist John Goodsall and bassist Percy Jones have matured musically; Manifest Destiny is a recent release on Buckyball Records that reflects much of what Percy is doing with his group Tunnels but with Johns unmistakable presence.
Morracan Roll and Do they Hurt? are also very tasty rearly releases.

These are great intros to the genius of Percy. |

"Unorthodox Behavior"
"Moroccan Roll"
"Livestock"
With Wal:
"Masques"
"Product"
"Do They Hurt?"
There are others that came later, but I recommend these first six. "Product" and "Do They Hurt" have Percy Jones playing on about half of each of the albums' songs and John Giblin playing (a Wal too) on the other half of each of the albums' songs. On "Product" both Percy and John play together on a song called "Wal-to-Wal".

One album to avoid is "Is There Anything About?" released in 1982. Compiled from leftovers and not from very good ones.
My favourite is "Masques". Brand X had it's share of great drummers/percussionists: Phil Collins, Chuck Burgi, Kenwood Dennard, Mike Clarke, Morris Pert and Bill Bruford (in an early incarnation). |

As you can see, if I've heard of them, now I just want to see what all the fuss is about! |

These can explain it a lot better than I can. Short version... "Yes." Long version... "Yes, but there's more to it than just that." PT fans usually fall into 'eras', so to speak. There's the psychedelic, very 'Floyd-like' era. There's the 'space-rock' era. And, then, there's the more modern era which has been more accessible and has flirted more on the pop and metal side of things. It's a real Pandora's Box. Open it. You'll be glad you did!
FWIW, new album "Fear of a Blank Planet" will be out in April. It's a 50-ish minute piece of continuous music made up of 6 songs with Robert Fripp and Alex Lifeson guesting. Should be very cool. Word is, it's heavier than most PT to date. |

Penny Arcade - my personal favorite fretless solo ever.
Believe It - incredibly melodic fretless solo.
