Brian Melvin and Jaco

I just stumbled over this CD called Jazz Street and there's another one but I don't know the name of it.Jaco was out of rehab and he actually sounds really strong and connected on those records.Unfortunately the drums on some of the tracks sound like badly programmed midi drums ( I think Brian was the drummer, what was he thinking?) and the mix is pretty bad at times but the bass in nice and out front. The rest of the musicians at times sound like they are playing in a cave.
It would be so nice if it was possible to get a hold of the masters and replace the drums and remix the whole thing. The performance of the other musicians is not too bad.And this could be a really wonderful CD if it was just reworked a bit.
The guitarist has that awful Mike Stern transistor distortion but he plays well.I don't know if something like that could be fixed.
But I think for Jaco fans this CD is still worth having.

Jazz Street has a couple of moments but I really enjoy the "Standards Zone" and "Curtain Call" CDs with Brian Melvin & Jon Davis in a trio playing mostly jazz standards.

I just downloaded the Standard Zone. I can't find any info on Curtain call though.
What tunes are on that one?

I dig the Jon Davis trio stuff to.

But, Jaco was a shell of his former self on theses CD's.

Even as a shell he still kicked some serious butt.

These are really great records. Even at this point in his life, he still kicked major ******* *** and these are an excellent showcase of his standard jazz prowess.

I'm a 'Standards Zone' fan. Not totally standard... but ALL Jaco!

Speak Like a Child/Invitation
Donna Lee
Solo Medley: Blackbird/Okonkole y Trompa/Continuum/Portrait
John & Mary
Mercy Mercy Mercy
So What/ Teen Town
Not his best stuff but still quite enjoyable and inspiring to me, I listen to it more than the NYC stuff which has a moment or 3.

I thought Standards Zone was one of the better releases Jaco is on in the 80's, it's too bad he didn't stay out in California.

I love the "Days Of Wine And Roses" track on the Japanese release of "Standards Zone."

I posted a few rare live rare Melvin/Jaco-recordings under my thread "Rare Jaco-Recordings", but they were in flac-format so I'll convert them to MP3 and upload them again soon under this thread. I think them being in Flac prevented many people from checking them out in the first place.
