The Brit House Band (my band): Born Under a Bad Jam

This is pretty rough but I figured it was worth sharing. This is from last night when we auditioned a drummer.

Born Under a Bad Jam

Let me know what you think of the drumming. We've offered him the gig. He's much more of a minimalist than our last drummer, who was very good but also very busy and often too loud. This new guy is steady, clean, and much quieter...we normally have a female vocalist (she had to leave early last night) and I noticed I can hear her vocals much better with this guy than I ever could with our old drummer.

Also worth noting: I am using a Frantone Lo Tone Classic Fuzz pedal on this recording. I can't remember the settings I used but the fuzz was maybe about halfway up. You can't really tell it's got fuzz turned on but it DOES sound fat and warm which I like.

Sounds pretty cool! Definitely a cool song, too. The Frantone Lo Tone has long been one of my favorite pedals, I really like it. And the drummer sounds good to me, he seems solid enough and leaves enough musical space for the rest of the band, which can be handy. Have fun jamming and rock on!

Thanks for the input, Mark. I just changed the host site from MegaUpload to MediaFire. That's just us jamming on "Born Under A Bad Sign." Yeah, you're right, I noticed this drummer leaves a good amount of space and his fills resolve well, which is...pretty imperative for a drummer

The Lo Tone sounds pretty weak on these little crappy computer speakers. I'll have to plug some headphones in...

I used to play in a blues band and we would do Born Under a Bad Sign. It was kind of my take on it, and I transposed it to D, kind of liked it in that key, not that it doesn't sound good in just about every key. I used to get away with using a pretty dirty tone on that one, though the singer in my band always wanted me to play it with a phase shifter. Some funky variations.

Unfortunately I only have crappy computer speakers to listen on that I'm sure don't give a good representation of the bass tone, but what I do hear is solid, and I know the Lo Tone gives a real solid tone, very warm and fat. I also get some more aggressive tones out of the Lo Tone too, especially with my Gibson SG Bass. I did some clips of the sounds I get with the Lo Tone if you'd be curious to check them out. Here's what I get with a Jazz Bass:

Frantone Lo Tone Classic Fuzz SOUNDCLIPS

And then the heavier tones I get with my SG Bass's bridge pickup:

Frantone Lo Tone Classic Fuzz SOUNDCLIPS PART2 (w/ aggressive, yes, aggressive tones)

And I even did a soundclip with a bass wah that I rather liked how it turned out here:

MORE Wilson Effects 12 Position Bass Q Wah SOUNDCLIPS

Really crunchy in a funky way I think. Of course I generally keep the fuzz cranked on the Lo Tone, I like it full bore, but it does a good range of sounds depending on where you set it and how you play. Definitely more versatile than some of the other fuzzes I've had.

Those clips sound great, man. Actually I believe I've heard these before. I must have found them when I was researching the Lo-Tone before I bought it. Personally I prefer just a little dirt not full-blown overdrive and the Lo-Tone does that perfectly. Plus it comes in refrigerator beige with red bakelite knobs. How cool is that?

We do this song also - the drummer did a perfect job - laid back and steady - just what this song requires.

How did you do the recording? It was good!

Sonar 8. My guitar player is a huge Sonar aficionado. That was totally unmixed, too. I swear, he gets better sounds unmixed with raw basement practices than I've heard at $75+ per hour professional studios w/ expensive mastering.
