British equivalent of The Wreaking Crew

Sign in to disble this ad
In the US a lot of the 60s/70s hits were ghosted by pro session guys featuring Hal Blaine, Leon Russell, Glen Campbell, Joe Osbourne, Carol Kaye, Tommy Tedesco, Larry Knectal etc. These guys even ghosted for the biggest bands with proficient players - the bands were often out on tour promoting their last album and the studios didn't want to waste time (= $$$) with mistakes, preferring seasoned pros.

I was wondering if the Brits had an equivalent stable of musicians.
I know Pagie and JPJ were session guys and met during Donovan sessions
I've heard Carl Palmer was a session drummer. True?
Heard Bonzo was a session drummer tho I find this doubtful because of his bombastic style. Was he on the Donovan hits as well?

Just for fun list some names, instruments and the "hits" they played on.

What about the big production pop numbers like Lulu and Pet?

If there is a link to this info, please post

thanx!

I think it was The Wrecking Crew, not the Wreaking Crew. As far as I know, they all smelled OK.

Wasn't Paul McCartney's Wicks part of the muso scene as well? Even Klaus Voorman was a session bass player at one point! hmmm... David Glover, Brian Odgers, Danny Thompson, Pino Palladino, David Paton... they were all excellent bass players...

Chris Spedding, Caleb Quaye on guitar come to mind.

with Roger Pope and Barry Morgan on drums - many albums were cut at Morgan Studios - owned by Barry... Dave Mattacks was a more recent addition.

As far as I know Barry recently passed away...
